Notice this at the bottom of CJ's posts - can't help but think of Southgate (frustrates me)

Fair point. However I’m guessing Southgate’s thinking tonight was if we went for it and didn’t take the chances (we didn’t take the few we had tonight), we could’ve opened ourselves up to concede and lose. That point means that we will have to get hammered (4-0 I think) by Wales to get eliminated. We obviously want to avoid Holland but given the situation in that group they could finish 1st, 2nd or even 3rd if they properly mess up.

That is exactly the mindset that cost us in the world cup and euros. The fear of loosing.

At least it wasnt as bad as the Iceland performance and eventual defeat. Mind you, it was close to that...

True. I do wonder. though - what has he actually told the players? Has he actually told them beforehand to be cautious, because a draw would be a good result overall.? Or is it just an observation afterwards. If it's the former, then that's a bit worrying, as it sets the tone for the performance. if it's the latter, then it just means we didn't play very well and he was unable to affect it. I always want England to do well, but the amount of time the side spent in the wrong area of the pitch in terms of posing a threat was worrying/poor. I think the commentator said that Kane had touched the ball more in his own penalty area than the oppositions. Anyway, on to the next one !

What’s happening with all these nice big stadiums when the World Cup is over?

A few are being completely taken apart, most are being halved in capacity.

All that attacking talent and we play like that. Slow, sideways, no invention.

Foden surely starts v Wales. I think Grealish will too. If Maddison was fit enough I'd like to see him start as well, but no way Southgate would do that.

When we play Wales you will see a totally different game. They will have to come out and will leave gaps. That is why i agree with others the likes of Foden,Grelish and even Maddison shoud play.
As for last night better you play like that early in the tournament than later. How many times have seen teams play 3 great opening and when the chips are down go missing.Just keep the faith.

It's as bad as when we lost to Scotland in the Euros. Now the USA only have to win there last game while our progress looks unlikely unless we can avoid a 4-0 defeat to that really dangerous Wales team.

In all seriousness I could see Wales holding us to a draw and Iran beating USA and topping the group.

I can’t bear it! Just send them home already and sack Southgate now, please!

Liam Gallagher had a bad meltdown last night. Deleted all the tweets now but they weren't pleasant.

One of the stadiums is being taken down and used in the next World Cup - I can’t remember where - Qatar only has 6 football teams so one each

We'll beat Wales, they're awful.

But we should have beaten USA last night giving us a chance to rest a few players against Wales and give a run out to a few squad members.

We’ve already lost both games and Southgate - who has a worse track record at tournaments than any England manager I can remember - won’t be able to recover against better opposition. The worst case scenario you describe is just too horrible to contemplate - we’re a global embarrassment and it’s all that anyone at this World Cup is talking about.

Not sure what the stats are for his sub appearance against Iran, but it seemed to me that almost every touch he had was poor, and passing v poor. And that was when we were hammering them.

Exactly this. In all seriousness, he should be able to mix things up regardless and finish top of the group. However, it's not difficult to see Gareth doing more of the same. Fortune favours the brave and all that.

How is that the worst case? Home nation team raises their game to stifle us is hardly a once in a lifetime event.

World Cups have always been a good opportunity for relative unknowns to showcase their skills, the football world is getting smaller and unknowns don't exist too much anymore but I think Asia is still relatively untapped compared to most. Some of these Arab players look pretty decent and could see one or two moving to Europe after this tournament.

Im not watching but could any do a job for us? I notice I seem to get matched with a lot of Arab teams playing fifa so I’m guessing they’re around our level.

Lewandoski accidentally stands on a players arm one yard from the goal line. Keeper takes the freekick from one yard inside the edge of the area. Gained about 16 yards. No query.

Don't get me wrong its hard to judge from watching one off matches from the WC I know but most of these Saudis look to me like they could fit in at Championship level and not look out of place. I particularly like that most of them seem quite aggressive in their play style, that would help immediately.
