Another thing that bothers me about his thinking is a win tonight means he can rest players against Wales and give a game to others who might need a run out.

My silver lining hope is he drops players for the Wales game. Be it on performance (not likely based on post match comments) or in the name of fitness.

And those players coming in to start - Foden and Grealish hopefully - stake a claim for a start next round.

Southgate is tactically and mentally stunted. We have an array of attacking talent to choose from and yet he's happy to let the USA totally dominate and act like footballing gallants. His reaction at the end - clearly heaping praise on the US coach and staff - shows how small time he is.
Mount is atrocious giving the ball away and chasing shadows, Sterling and Bellingham were non existent, they have to be replaced for Wales.

Regardless of how we do in the tournament we need someone else after it's finished.

Not our best game tonight by any means but just looked at the win ratio of England managers. If we beat Wales next week.then Mr Southgate will have a better record than any England manager since we first had one in 1946 with the expection Fabio Capello and Big Sam(one game)even better than Sir Alf.Not bad for a sh1t manager.

One thing I always notice with England even when overall they play well is how laboured and hard work it seems for them to move the ball forward. Even the “lesser” sides seem to comfortably make the transition from defence to attack with pace and 2-3 touches. It seems that the things that I see foreign players do instinctively takes a huge amount of effort and concentration for English players. Is it because of how we still coach youngsters in this country? Is it because at club level one of the many foreign stars they have the luxury of being surrounded by does all that stuff? All I know is it’s been the same way for the 40 years I’ve watched them. English players all seem from the same mould, lots of huffing and puffing but never looks like we are about to repeatedly split open a defence

That’s one of my theories, surrounded by foreign talent. Put them all together it’s a different story

I agree. Wales aren't going to care if some of our first choice players end up getting a knock.

We're going to try and camp in for a draw against a team that has to go for broke in its talisman's last World Cup and that always raises its game against England.

Phil Foden is a genuine world class talent and he was left on the bench all game.

The lack of paragraphs hurt my head but they are more than capable than doing it. If we had conceded, I do believe they would have found those passes.

As England players they are weak mentally.

I would have taken off Saka Mount and Sterling for Foden Grealish and Wilson and gone for a goal. Kane plays so deep he is getting in Maguire’s way.

We didn't require world class talent to overcome the opposition tonight.
Best we save it than chase something (we weren't desperate for) in the last ten minutes that could have been injured?

Given the usual standard of vocabulary and grammar on SBT I’ll forgive myself a lack of indentations. Really I should add a new paragraph here but much more fun not to. I stand by my comment. Win lose or draw we move the ball forward way slower than most international teams.

Who gets James Corden after this? That's the worst thing to come out of the result.

We could have been free of him, if we had won.

No, the players are capable they're just playing in a very negative set up where the options just don't exist to move the ball forward that quickly, the full backs are level at best with the ball as the centre backs go forward

Southgate's comments here....for me he is right about one thing. They dictated the pace at which we played . Way too slow..
As for the 'delighted with the way we played from the back' If he means that, then he is an idiot, or overly obsessed with looking at defence than our effectiveness as a team,

Southgate:
Totally different game, so pleased with the way we played from the back. They make it difficult to build and our two centre backs I don't think people appreciate how good they are. They dictated play tonight

The point probably suited both sides and that showed throughout the second half in particular. Meant a pretty poor game to watch but will take it if things follow a similar path to when we drew 0-0 in our second group game last year. Thought the back four and Pickford were very solid. Can’t really say much more.

Interesting stadium. Like the finishing touches to make it like Bedouin Tent. What I would say is if we win the group and progress all the way we would be coming back here for the R16, QF and SF as well as Spain v Germany in a couple of days. It’s a proper pain in the arse to get to and get away from. Probably getting back at 3 in the morning tonight when our apartment is less than an hours drive away. Every cloud if we do finish second!

Notice this at the bottom of CJ's posts - can't help but think of Southgate (frustrates me)

I agree. In that game all England had to do was match the USA intensity (seen against wales) but we seemed to be intent to stand off. Why we didn't put their back two under I'll never know. Tim Ream wasn't convincing in the championship...
