I don't think that actually mate sorry , Ronaldo nazario would absolutely wreck the world's best defenders today .

If they are faster , it's not by too much overall

No he'd struggle against Harry Maguire because he's got a good nutritionist.

I think overall match sharpness is better , football players will generally be fitter and the game will be slightly faster ..

Defending in itself is worse though , not many top defenders about today

But people have to remember that players like pirlo , slower than a slug only retired 5 years ago , and players like busquets who are slow as shit are still playing at the top level at 35

I think coaching standards, tactictical analysis, dietary improvements mean the general standards are better in football now than they have ever been.

You probably don't see as many long range goals because of the tactical changes.

Doesn't mean X individual from the 90s is worse than Y mediocre player from today.

Probably not fair to make that comparison tbh because of the change in the game.

Some declinism on show in this thread I think.

Like I said I think the game is slightly faster , players are fitter ..

But we also have to remember the game has changed too , as pointed out one of the reasons Haaland does so well is he is an old fashioned 9 playing In an era of no contact where defenders generally can't defend that well .

The game itself is different, more tactical less free , but also along with that less enjoyable , if you were 15 you wouldn't know any difference either way

I know we love an argument on here but i don't disagree with SBT that players are probably getting incrementally fitter, but from 10-20 years ago, that really isn't going to make the kind of difference he's suggesting.

On defending you are also bang on. Italy alone probably had 3 or 4 centre backs that were all better than whoever is considered to be the best these days.

Football has declined in many ways and not just on the pitch, in fact thats by far the least of footballs problems. I'm aware it might just be a me thing which is fine but i used to absolutely love the game, now i could happily walk away from it if it wasn't for my beloved CCFC.

Wonder if the back four and keeper are related?
I can imagine the manager saying “pass it to Kim”

There is a lot more focus on retaining the ball these days. Teams take less risks. I think it makes the sport more boring. I actually find watching the Premier League dull. La Liga is just lacking any real quality in general, other than a few really top, top players.

Pass it round the top or the box and round the sides again gently, but ensure to keep hold of the ball at all costs. Set the alarm clock.

I think a lot of it has to do with youth prospects being stuck in academies with no pathways to the first team.

I the modern era Ronaldo would be sat in a big team's youth set up with the occasional loan and then end up sold on without having developed as much. There is absolutely no chance he would have had two seasons of mens football aged 17-19 at PSV to find his feet.

That's just the superstars too, there must be loads of players who could have developed into decent international players for mid-ranking countries who just sat in the Chelsea academy until they turned 25.

It's hard to believe with all the PL investment in academies for a long period now that they are not producing more players - seeing as they basically have these kids from the cradle
There are a lot of non-elite foreign players in PL.
Hard to believe clubs can't do better particularly as they seem to be regularly fleeced (paying over the odds) when buying overseas

I'm sorry I know we finished this but the 5 fastest men ever were all born in the 80s and with the possible exception of Yohan Blake, who might still be running, have all retired. So not necessarily true either.

I think he'll ultimately end up being an average signing if you just take him as an individual and not hold the price against him... but the price was obscene.

So athletes in general are getting slower? What’s the explanation?

I didn't say they were getting slower, i've merely given you a piece of information. Up to you what you take from it.. presumably just the 5 freaks of nature who would have all ran even faster if they were born a decade later for some reason.

Usain bolt holds the 100m record and 200 m record 13 years ago , just to add to the mix

Womens 200 m record from 1988 400m record is from 1985

There seems to be less screamers of goals in this world cup.

Nobody is banging a Tony Yeboah in off the bar from a volley.

Is that not because they spend a lot of time doing aerodynamic research with the ball these days?

I’m not sure what you mean then? I think the trend is pretty clear that athletes in general are getting faster/stronger etc and they obviously have better facilities available today, but sure, there are a few records that have lasted many years regardless. Are you suggesting that human athleticism may have peaked in the early 2000s?

No i'm saying that the 5 fastest men of all time were all born in the 80s, thats it. You seem to think there's been some sort of radical human evolution in the last 10 years, so where are all these robotic speedsters at?

Than 10 or 20 years ago? I really don't agree.. many players were playing 10 years ago so that makes no sense at all. If you go back 30 plus years then yes definitely.
