Ok, so with a lot of people criticising the link with McGoldrick as a player who doesn't score many and suggesting we go for someone proven, i'd like to ask those people to make realistic suggestion for players who are proven goalscorers at this level that we should be going for.

Beavon. Scored goals last year. Is on the edge of realistic. After that I'm struggling.

Is one season proven though? Proven is doing it season after season.

To make it easier, here is a list of strikers available on a free transfer: http://www.thepfa.com/transferlist/listedplayers/sortbydate/cf/outofcontract/1/

It's as proven as it gets in league 1 as most that do that tend to end up in the Championship pretty quickly.

that's the problem isn't it, anyone who has actually banged in anywhere near 20 goals a season at around the level of League 1 will cost more than we can afford so you're always going to be taking a punt on someone and hoping a change of club will kickstart their scoring. The last time we thought we'd signed a proven goalscorer was Eastwood, everyone got excited and look what happened!

Yeah, I'm not saying he might not do it again. But then he hasn't been chased by many, if any, Championship clubs as far as I know? Le Fondre did it in the league below, but then so did Cody. So you'd be hoping he can really step it up this season. For me, he's our no.1 striker, so he needs players to play alongside him that can play to his stengths and chip in with a few. Ball seemed to link up well with him the other night, but we need more strength in depth up front and I don't think any of those we'll get (if we do) will have fantastic goalscoring records if I'm honest.

This is my point - I think Thorn believes McDonald is his goalscorer and the rest are there to chip in. So if you can get hold of a few players who can score 10 goals (Ball, Elliot, Fleck, McGoldrick) then you give yourself a chance.

But EVERYONE is looking for a goalscorer. The best you can do is get someone who you think will succeed in the system you want to play.

You often get a lot of one season wonders as defenders usually figure out how to play an attacker after a few games against them

Proven or not, history suggests if you join us you lose your ability score.

Just looking through players on that list of free agents and saw Giles Barnes , he looked a superstar as a teenager but didnt he have serious knee problems ?

made 33 apps for donny last year and scored one, I know he's not a striker but I doubt he could have done too well if he was released.

People will blame the embargo and SISU, but the fact is we came out of it 2 days later but he got a better offer

Yeah, big miss that one. Don't think we would be having this debate now. Bloody transfer embargo.

If he really wanted to come to us he would have waited a couple of days wouldn't he?

I Think Earnshaw would be a good acquisition for you lot. Unwanted at Cardiff and even though he's getting on abit, can still score goals.

Although I wish we got him, he is not a proven goalscorer at L1 and only did it last season.

He would probably demand a nice wage though.

James Poole from Hartlepool seems like a talent, also Ashley Barnes from BHA if he ever came available, just a thought nothing more

At the time he signed it was unclear when we would come out our embargo.

You could argue that we should have got him on a months rolling contract with the promise of a longer contract once the embargo had been ended. If portsmouth can do it, why couldnt we?

And, if a deal had been lined up for some time, he might have heard a line like "hold on, just a few more days, and we'll be out of the embargo very soon" several times before...

Portsmouth are in a unique situation, under embargo, got no players so an exception has to be made.

Don't nessecarily agree though

I can't see sheffers being a regular starter, once Barton and Jennigs are fully fit.

Just shows how desperate it is when players like that are being picked out! Kind of prove's the OP's point.

But he won't be played up front if Cody gets injured.

Really? Had 13 clubs and only scored at a rate better than one-in-four at one. Current form 4 in 38 for Watford. Not my definition of a 'proven' goalscorer. Unless you meant to include the word 'non' between both words and hyphenate it to the latter
