I have taken a look at our remaining fixtures and those of what I would call rivals and see we could yet make a grab of second spot. It will not be easy and requires us to not have any more bad runs. Hopefully we are over those and our new players have bedded in and we are a stronger and more energised outfit again with a bit more back bone.

We will lose a few and draw a few with some of those being surprises no doubt but overall we have a very big task to make it. We must win all our remaining home games bar a draw or two at worse with a surprise away win where not expected to offset those surprises.

The more likely outcome is the play-off's which I believe are almost a given unless under Tony Mowbray we see a collapse?...and that is highly unlikely.

It's almost exciting to imagine us in the play-off's and what an achievement that in itself would be for TM and his charges in his first season. Support would be immense at Wembley and that ought to propel us to promotion but I still don't like the thought of it and we should do all we can to try and clinch that second spot. I think 84+/- points would do it. I can see 78/80 points coming our way but once you are a point or two from the auto places then the nerves jangle for all teams and just maybe we can capitalise on that and just get a few more points to make it.

We have recently thrown away too many points like Scunny and I really hope we are not looking back with regret on those lost opportunities.
Support is crucial now and if you want your team to go up then let us get up at every game we can and make yourselves heard.

How many actually think we can make it up and why? How many think we will not and why?

I think we CAN make it of course, but I don't believe we will.

It would need a fantastic run from us and also other teams to slip up and I can't quite see that combination of events happening unfortunately.

I really do fancy our chances in the play-offs though. No point in thinking of City of old, this is a different animal now.

So, play-offs, but I do think we have a small chance of the autos.

What we need to do now is string back to back wins together. If we can get within 2-3 points of 2nd, then I'd be very confident.

We do need those above though to have a few slips along the way.

We can make it. When we are on form I think we are the best side in the division as far as 'good football' goes. However I think our inconsistency and frailties will bring us up just short of autos but in playoffs. As you say we have thrown points away including against Walsall and burton...should have had three and one respectively

No way for autos. Someone with more time with me can probably show we need title winning form from now until the end of the season to get autos.

I think we will get fourth or fifth spot and get knocked out in the playoffs.

An injury to Adam Armstrong would seriously fuck things up. This is the biggest fear for the rest of the season. If he gets injured play offs would be in danger.

Mathematically autos is still on, personally I think we would need to win 12-13 of our remaining 15 games to stand a chance of autos and I just don't think we're good enough to do that.

From this position we should easily finish in the play offs and TM and the team would have failed if they fail to do so.

As Mr T said, we need to keep Armstrong fit, and interestingly where people are saying it's good that the midfield has kept rotating to stay fit, Armstrong is never rotated or rested. He could potentially be burnt out by the end of the season.

Why can't we make the auto's?

We have been on a poor run for weeks. But we now have a decent defence again. And although we have had a poor run we are still only 6 points off the auto's and we have the best GD. If we can go on a run like I think we will we will soon be in the top 2. All the teams at the top are dropping points unexpectedly.

We are only 6 points behind Gillingham in second spot and of course have to play them on their muck heap, forget the rest below them Gillingham are the target. Virtually all around us play each other before April
luckily our toughest on paper run doesn't happen until April, frankly if we don't gain ground on Gillingham by then we don't deserve
autos.

I think it's hard to imagine dropping out of the playoff places after the season we've had, but I don't think we have the bottle to progress through it.

As was mentioned earlier in the thread, the turn of events that would have to combine in order for us to hit the autos would seem unlikely, but the run of fixtures in March could see us in a considerably better position than we are now, especially as some of the other teams in an around us have their turn to play harder fixtures.

Who knows though, we're Coventry! Just about anything could happen and I still wouldn't be surprised.

It's too soon yet to write off automatic promotion. As we've seen recently all teams above us have had inconsistent results. IIRC Derby were top of the Championship last season with 11 games to go and they didn't even finish top 6.

Automatic promotion is still possible if we string together a very unlikely series of wins. I cannot see that happening so I'm going for the play-offs. And since this is a lottery which more teams must fail than win, I have to forecast we will be eliminated at that point. Burton and Wigan to get the auto spots. Gillingham to knock us out.

I think we can still do it based on the team changes we have made recently. JOB has been shipped out as not needed. There is a lot of confidence in the squad again. Back bone has been established and we not only are capable of scoring every game but we have a better back line now.
I'm keeping my hopes of second spot while Burton will now win it. My heart says yes but my head says play off's. We are favourites in the play-off's though as we are the biggest club and the support and expectation will be as good as a 12th man each game. If I knew we would go up via the play-off's I'd prefer it for all the excitement!

Them two games were when TM could play the players up front that he wanted. The games we didn't win around them games were when he couldn't play the players he wanted up front. And our defence is now much better. So without those games our GD would be much better again.

However with Stephens and Cargill we have a settled CD partnership now, you have the likes of Rose and Lorentzon (however you spell it) coming up to speed, I don't think we'll be too short, if we have tired legs; we can shuffle around if needs be. Cole seems to be up to speed now and able to complete a game, earlier on in his first few games we practically lost a sub because we all knew that Cole would be blowing at 60/65 mins so in effect it was a nailed on sub, thus losing the extra sub when we need it (shutting up shop to preserve a result or even chasing a result) I think Mowbray has done well in Jan, with bringing 2 defenders in. Even more so, because they know each other and have experience with playing in the same team together (no gelling required) think of it that way and it could be an extremely shrewd move.

Amazing how some folks on here spin what people say and twist what they read. Or is that just a lack of intellect?

I said JOB was shipped out and he was. Whether he wanted to or not, this is not a free for all where you decide your next move. He is contracted to CCFC and the manager makes that decision. If he wanted to keep him he would not have gone.

As for biggest club. Who in the top likely 6 is bigger? Only Sheff. Utd can compete on that level and are not currently near the top 6.

As for the poll so far, it seems 75% believe the play off's will be achieved. Optimism from CCFC supporters at last!
However caution in the spin zone! - half of those think we will ultimately fail, a sure sign of the pessimistic support we have always galvanised at CCFC.
But 20% still think auto is possible so there are the true believers out there still.
The other 5% - are you sure you support your team?
