There are arguments about whether this will make a difference to organ donation. Can't understand it myself why folk don't donate. Give others a chance to live. If I could I would stipulate donating to consenters and not to opt-outers. Why should you receive if you are not prepared to give? And what's so precious about a body part that will be rotting within minutes of death?

It’s an interesting one. I’d like the donor cards to be legally enforceable rather than an indication meaning family can refuse. I’m a little uncomfortable with presumed consent

Sometimes it's on religious grounds though isn't it.

Shame it can't just be standard practice.

Yes you're right Otis, there's nothing like a good dose of religious dogma to trump human compassion.

Please don't bring Trump into it. You've just put me off my pudding.

I don’t own you and neither does the state. I have had a donor card since I was 16 and made damn sure my family know my wishes but if I didn’t feel like that who am I to say the state owns your body parts

Yes we're all aware of that but the problem is that not enough people do so that's why we're discussing presumed consent.

If anything truly belongs to you, it's your own body.
As far as I'm concerned, no-one should be allowed to take ownership of any part of it without my consent or the consent of my heirs.

You think you own your own body but you're not allowed to get help to kill it off in this country.

Remember suicide is telling god, 'you can't fire me, I quit'

What about if we top you off and then stick a donor card in your pocket?

I'd have a card in the other pocket saying to ignore any card in the other pockets.

What they really need to have is a national database for all the personal options.
I'm sure a computer savvy person could set this up in a few days.
It would just have a list of options and you would check the ones you want.
No more donor cards, bracelets or obscure checkboxes on paper forms.
The Police and Emergency Services would have instant access to it.
I guess you'd still have the problem of what to do about people who had never set their options.

We would cut out all your other pockets and besides, on the donor card we would say this card supercedes all other cards.

You own your own body, but when it comes to suicide, if you thinking about topping yourself, you don't currently own your own mind so custody of it should be taken temporarily whilst you find it again.

Wales have had presumed consent for a couple of years or so but the stats are too small to draw any conclusions.

Are you saying that every person who chooses to end their life is mentally ill?

Not suggesting any are mentally ill. Just not of sound mind/thinking right at that point.

So if they presume consent and you later recover and want your kidney back, will they remove it from the donee and reinstall it in you?
