So were debating the difference between a good league 1 player and a very good league 1 player not much difference really.

I would say if a player would go into 90% of league 1 first 11s he should be considered very good. Clarke has the best games to goal ratio in the division, (even higher than Mcgoldricks who is 2nd highest) not that this means he is better than him. Baker I think is the highest scoring midfielder in the division. Not just this season they have excelled at league 1 either. Clarke has something like 35 goals in his last 65-70 league 1 games and Baker had bags of goals also at Stockport before.

Players like Thomas arguably have potential to play at a higher level, does this make him a very good league 1 player?

Was Bigirimana a very good championship player last season as he had potential to play higher?

I don't disagree with a lot of what you are saying but when I look at our side I see some good players and some with decent potential however would I be gutted if any left........ maybe only Murph or Baker (at a push). For me (and its my opinion only) I would say on that basis that we have good players not very good. Bigi was a good player with huge potential which is showing now, I don't see that in Thomas personally and don't see what the fuss is about with him.

If he's going for 24 players...I wonder what the make up of the squad will be
If he's determined to player 451..

Gk x2
Rb x2
Cb x 4
Lb x 2

Dm x2
Cm x 2
ACM x2

Rw x2
LW x2

CF x2

Plus 2 others, surely at least 1 more striker.

I imagine some of the midfielders will be able to play more than one position so you could sacrifice a midfielder for another striker, probably need another CB as well.

Will this be a squad backed up by young players or will the players like Wilson, Haynes, Willis be expected to be part of the 24 and makes significant contributions I wonder?

Fair enough, I just don't think they're many in the squad that we would particularly miss, Clarke and Murphy and possibly baker. Bakers 3rd top midfielder scorer behind Ritchie and Baxter.

Although bakers stats are fantastic, his alround play is pretty poor, he gives the ball away a lot.

The way SP was talking, that the youngster would be part of this 24 man squad, especially those 19+ years. So it could be that smaller doesn't mean more quality.

At least we know that Moussa can play wide left

How do you define a very good player though? If you go purely off stats Clarke and Baker are the best striker and midfielder in the league, does this mean there are no midfielders or strikers who are very good for league 1 level? I know there is other things to consider other than stats but seeing as I don't watch any other teams regularly I haven't got anything else to go on besides stats.

These are the 13 players I would like SP to keep:

Murphy
Christie
Clarke
Willis
Edge
Adams
Baker
Jennings
Moussa
Fleck
Barton
Thomas
Clarke

6 new decent senior signings, plus the youngsters (Wilson, Daniels, Haynes etc)

I really can't see us holding on to Cyrus.

Me neither. Cant see him going higher than Championship, not this summer anyway. Will probably do a Keogh and go to a Derby or a team alike (comfortable championship team)

Murphy, Baker and Leon are very good L1 players; Cyrus & Adams are getting there, and I expect Thomas with a proper pre-season to be as well. Barton and Fleck have the ability to be great players at this level and we've already seen more from them under Pressley than previous managers. Clear out the players who have been mooted in this thread, add pace, leadership with 4-5 players, there's no reason why we can't be challenging next season. Well, aside from our present situation, of course..

I agree with that.

Some people are understating our squad a bit, just need to get a few decent players. Hopefully we get rid of 5-10 players.

They are good league one players, who have had a good season, neither are good enough for the championship. For me a very good league one player is one who has the potential to play higher.

Marcus Stewart once won the PL golden boot, was he a very good PL player?

Anyway Covstu said it, I just agreed so I don't know why you're having a go at me.

I think it's a rather arrogant to say that McGoldrick isn't good enough for the Championship. He's been in the Championship the majority of his career, playing there regularly since making his break through at Southampton, and when he played lower he was blatantly a class above anything in the division. He hasn't had the same goal-ratio at Ipswich, but he's done OK-solid Championship return-and scored some absolute screamers amongst them. Enough for Ipswich to sign him permanently. So you'd best let Mick know that he's "not a Championship player".

I was talking about Clarke and Baker not Mcgoldrick. If you read my earlier post, I said mcgoldrick was the only player we had that looked head and shoulders above this league.
