Its beyond me why it isn't standard for player contracts to have relegation clauses. If the club goes down your salary goes down but you are free to leave.

All clubs should be doing that and remove the need for parachute payments.

Tbf I believe, Sunderland were the only club out of the four which were in the relegation battle, who do have relegation clauses in their contract.

Might just be speculation, but (other than having the best manager for the job) this could be a reason why they seemed to show more bottle than the other clubs

I partially agree. The gap between the bottom half of the Prem and the top half of the Championship is getting smailer. But only because so many of those teams have recently switched places. In general though, the gap between the rich clubs and the poor clubs is getting larger every season.

Really? Youve had West Ham Southampton Tottenham and Leicester all crash the party this year. Apart from the Leicester fairytale, who would have put Spurs 3rd (almost 2nd) West Ham with Champions League destiny in their own hands with 3 games to go, Southampton battling United for 5th and Chelsea and Liverpool being also-rans? Newly promoted Watford and potentially Bournemouth just 5 points behind Champions Chelsea?

The big clubs will continue to spend big money on players but the lesser valued players are now good enough to give them a run for their money. Will we ever see an "invicible" season again? I doubt it. Will the fight for Champions League football be over by March again? I doubt it. The gap is getting smaller.
