Neither keeper fucked up for the goals.

MVE lost his man for the first and Bidwell with a lovely assist for the second

100%. I thought Kitching looked fit and really sharp against Bristol but the complete opposite of Thomas & Binks who looked nervous on the ball playing L2 opposition.

- Started with our strongest team and it had BTA up front, JDS at LB
- Brighton also played their strongest possible team 1st half
- No Bassette at all suggests he’s off (hopefully just on loan)
- No Lati or Binks (2nd half CB pairing was Perry and Bidwell)
- No Eccles
- 2 of our 3 chances came from crosses, looks like the tactics haven’t evolved from cross and inshallah

Just seen the line up. It isn't our strongest. Any team with JDS, BTA, and Sheaf cannot be in any way. A questionable defender, a striker who is beyond frustrating, and a midfielder that significantly holds us back. It should have occurred by now that we aren't going to score many goals when we have the latter two in. The midfield of Sheaf and Grimes is a big problem, and far too defensive.

In the last game when Torp came on and played with Grimes, we were much more dangerous. This should be the way forward. It also lifts pressure off us at the back. I know it is only early in preseason, but hopefully the penny will drop for Lampard before we waste too many games.

Two things to come out of the pre season so far, is the potential of Andrews and Perry.

Yeah, just seen.

This midfield experiment needs to be binned. I also sincerely hope we start the season with someone more competent than BTA leading the line.

Agreed. I can’t get past the feeling that defensive lapses and stupid goals are going to kill us again next season.

I would love for Thomas and Kitching to prove me wrong and turn into VVD & Konate.

We had a pretty good pre season last summer which led into a very poor first half of the season. We're a bit ahead of Brighton in pre-season and so I can see the reasoning behind it.

The forwards aren't good enough, that won't be changed by slightly more optimal pre season opposition.

I take it you haven’t played at much of a level ?

If you had you would know that Forwards thrive on confidence and scoring gives them that.

You only have to watch Simms and Bassette play to see that they are clearly lacking confidence.

It is possible we will go into the first match of the season with 5 defeats and 1 win in pre season and without barely scoring a goal …. If that happens we have got the pre season wrong.

It’s a fine line when it comes to pre-season. Play easier opposition, win games but then when the league games start you suddenly have to play teams of a similar standard and you’re not ready. Play harder teams, lose games so confidence is perhaps lower.

I’ve alluded plenty of times to Simms needing the fire in his belly to perform. Bassette however hasn’t actually shown high performance levels since he arrived and in my view needs to prove himself elsewhere on loan. BTA has never lacked work rate but is let down by the technical side and his positioning.

A very good set of manager/coaches can of course remedy all 3 issues. If they can, no problem. If they can’t, we’re really going to struggle for goals.

Simms isn’t that guy. He’s an introvert striker that needs confidence to perform. When he’s confident he gets shots off quickly, his first touch is better etc. When he’s lacking confidence the opposite occurs.

I don’t see a way in for Simms. Looks like he’s firmly behind BTA and Wright. However, I can’t see him leaving so unsure where we go from there. I could see Asante leaving as he’s seems the type of player that wants to be playing regularly regardless of the standard he’s at. Could be wrong.

Bassette needs a league 2 loan. Needs to play against physical centre halves and learn his game. Get a sending off out of his system and learn the consequences of his ‘shithousery’. A lot of our fans get offended when you say he needs a loan but if he’s as good as they make out he’ll get 10 goals before Christmas and we get him back full of confidence. If he fails we know he needs more work.

I am very worried that Wright will be sold. I have a strong feeling Bling is planning on cashing in on him and MVE.

Put all our forwards in the window and everyone would choose the one who’s still injured. And even he is an ‘in the mood’ player.

I know people are using the preseason games as proof that we urgently need a new striker (I’m not fully convinced), but if it is the case then they also show the defence isn’t up to scratch either.

We can’t carry a player who needs a rocket up his arse every week to perform to an acceptable standard.

I'm thinking of taking my daughter to her first game against either St Pauli or Hull game, she's never been before and she's only 6, so whilst I'm excited to let her experience a match day, I'm also worried she could be overwhelmed. Also any suggestions on which stand/block to go to for her first visit and whether you think st Pauli atmosphere will be a a bit poor by comparison to the Hull game?

Suspect we're working on both but we need a few outward transfers to start dropping.

Have you tried typing "Betis" in to the email search? Didn't think I'd had mine (St Pauli came through) so had a look and found it.

For me, the difference is that while the strikers unit still have their best player to come back from injury, the defensive unit is already at full strength, and may in fact get weakened before the season starts. That’s a worry for me.

I think a decent keeper will help a great deal, I also think an LCB will be one of our big signings. I don't know why, maybe I'm mad, I actually think Doyle might be on, but that would require a sizeable outgoing first.
LB is an interesting one. I think Bidwell will go, thank goodness. Still don't think a great deal of Dasilva so that requires Brau to get up to speed quickly. Could be a problem area still.

I know it is difficult to choose your pre-season games when you want them, but I favour a slow progression from poor to, middling to top sides. I feel money plays a part now. Playing a lower side with a player we may be interested in, also has its attractions.
Just leave out teams that kick us. We have had Nuneaton and that side abroad we played last season who were animals.
Not sure this idea of playing some teams that are way above us (Monaco) is productive. I notice very little post match comment from Frank on that one.

I would start her off with the friendly. The problem with the Hull game is there will be a lot of noise. Winter isn't as bad as you can take ear muffs if needed and just put them on her. Take her early but not too early. Be prepared to leave early. Let her soak it all up and get used to it but boredom can also take over.

Most of all take some pictures as you're making memories.

I just cannot raise the optimism I had for the start of last season. We have to be better up front to compete this season. Unless I’m overestimating the quality of the league then I just can’t see our forwards cutting the mustard.
The only places we have possibly improved is Keeper and left back.

I would schedule all our friendlies against the biggest clubs possible and use it to get a good look at any youngsters we may want on loan. Then have the last one be against Leamington or Coventry Sphinx to spank them and get the strikers feeling good.

If you have concerns about noise go the opposite end to the away fans, who could be quite noisy throughout the game.

We're taking our 6 year old to his first game, against Pauli. He's autistic and struggles with noise, but is adamant he wants to go to a game. We chose this one as we don't mind if we have to sack it off and leave early. Fully expecting to probably leave at half time. I think boredom will likely kick in by then, or the noise will be too much.

Good luck with it. Agree with the other poster; get plenty of photos. Their first game is always a special memory.
