If you look at the teams who have been promoted from League 1 over the last four years, the one thing they all have in common is, not only a 20+ goal a season player, but a second striker capable of scoring at least 15. I share some people's optimism about Cody MacDonald next season (if we can keep him - rumours of interest from Huddersfield) but only alongside a big bully of a target man who can also score. Without 2 players like these, not matter how much good football you play, you will not be successful in this division.

Weren't we after that Michael Jacobs from there as well?

He's a great prospect. I'm sure we were very interested in him a couple of years back. He has just won Northampton's player of the season and numerous scouts were watching him last week. I think Derby had a bid turned down for him. I suspect he will go to a Championship club.

Just reading through the posts and I think it's really brought it home to me just how far we've sunk when we talk about getting players in from the likes of Yeovil, Wycombe, Altrincham, Shrewsbury and Orient. Bloody hell. It doesn't seem that long ago we were buying and selling players in the Premier League . I suppose we've just got to do the best with what we've got and bite the bullet.

JH bought, humpries, barr, bly, whitehouse, & gave rees a chance after laveric failed to impress,
all for a minimal amount, those signings allied to important defensive signings put us firmly on the way,
but,
our owners seem likely to never be aware of potential talent,
even less appoint anyone with football knowledge,
KD, OI, et al you stand accused of being inept,
about as much use as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest,

Williams is rubbish, was a boo boy for Bristol Rovers fans in their L1 relegation campaign 2 seasons back, bit of a tryer but nothing else. He's done well this year for Yeovil but still doesn't look a good L1 player to me. Just a flash in the pan good season he's had IMO.

There are strikers worth a gamble in non league for fairly low wages. It is a gamble but has worked with people like Beckford. Particularly at this level.

Damian Reeves at Altrincham. 44 goals this season. Who knows if he could cut it in league 1.

Unless he's kicked on massively, nah. Was questions over whether he could cut it at BSP level in the past few years, never mind L1.

Strangely enough, even though Williams is banging them in this season, prior to that he scored just 10 goals in 102 appearances at Bristol Rovers. That is shocking!

Whether they didn't play to his strengths or he has suddenly come good who knows. But how do you got from 10 in 102 to 17 in 38?

He was played out wide a bit at Bristol, but you are right, their fans thought he was dire.

You seem to have a very good non league knowledge. Follow anyone in particular?

Lots of soft spots for various teams, but I just follow it all in general. AFC Wimbledon were an obvious favourite. So we should leave Jack Midson exactly where he is, he wouldn't step up, oh no, not good enough

Kaid Mohammad at Cheltenham is an ex-Don who was great in non-league, has starred this season for Cheltenham I think. Very quick. Midson is a grafter and a goalscorer. Jacobs from Northampton looks a quality prospect.

THAT SAID-Ideally I'd say we want to sign an experienced Championship striker: an Alan Lee-type, or maybe David Connolly. Or Iwelumo. That, realistically, is what you need to get promoted from L1-experience, know how, and ability above the level you are trying to get out off. We could build a lovely Dream Team of L1-BSP level players, but if only 2 out of 3 come off and prove to have been playing below their level, we're screwed. The reality is we'll be lucky if we can afford anyone at all!
