You’ve got to assume every champ player has been extensively looked at and decided against by every PL club really. Obviously they’ll miss some but it’s probably the least likely league to find pl quality players if you think about it.

I agree with your overall point, but I do find it strange how Grimes stayed at Swansea for so long without a bigger team signing him. Maybe one of the yoyo teams or someone like that.

He was suggested on transfer threads on here ahead of 23/24 but iirc people thought he was too defensively minded.

No better or worse than our current options and we have 3 people already for his position.

So as a signing for next month, I’d pass.

Not sure myself. A waste of money maybe for next season in the Prem but we're very light in midfield. We're even struggling to put players on the bench at the moment. And I can't think of many players that could just slot into our team with the way we play.

Sorry what, you want him in midfield?

He's not a midfielder?

Fulham tried to sign him when they came down but Swansea wouldn't sell.

With the way we play yes if needed. We're down to Simms being fit. Maybe a similar role to BTA. That would have been laughed at before this season started.

Wright will be back in the side soon enough and BTA will be back in January.

Whittaker isn’t a midfielder, if anything he does best cutting in from the right like Sakamoto does, but we’ll be adding a recognised winger there anyway.

The problem with Wright is he seems to pick up injuries. We're down to 1 fit striker. We have nobody for the bench. If Simms gets injured then what? BTA could easily have a setback because of the type of injury.

I'd have Thomas up front if we're left without a striker but he is a key player in our defence. And once the transfer window closes we have to go with what we have.

Who would you put up front if Simms gets injured? Another injured striker?

I’d be looking at Whittaker as a backup option in case Rushworth gets injured, we are light in that area atm

That’s at least 2 scenarios down the road from where we are- Simms is fit and in great form and Wright is back now too. Some sensible rotation and we will be fine until BTA is back- and that’s without any January business .

Ipswich spunked 120 million and went down with a whimper. Sunderland have spent 150 million + and have every chance of staying up. They will struggle during AFCON as could lose 6 or 7 players so will need to bounce back after.

Depends when the points deduction kicks in They've certainly spent quite a bit more than Forest did and they cheated.

I might as well join in with stupid comments as we're down to 1 fit striker. I mention a striker and am supposed to want him in midfield.

Running from midfield. He plays best on the counter attack. Strong, fast and a very good shot. That's what he does best. Simms is best in the 6 yard box. A different type of striker.

He plays best cutting inside from the right. We’re better off signing recognised wingers which I’m sure we will do.

All down to opinion. To me we need both. The perfect player when playing on the counter attack.

Wright and Simms are great on the counter. Sakamoto great cutting inside from the right but we need another. Whittaker isn’t that man.

In the last few years it would have been impossible because of family issues.

Whittaker hasn’t even been at Boro for a year yet. We’re not signing him in the Championship and not sure he’s worth £10+ million for the Prem.

It’s not the type of signing we’re going to be looking at.

I think his pace and strength is the issue TBH. He’s not exactly your archetypal premier league athlete.

Suppose we have a budget of around £50m for players because they'll be wages on top of that. What do we do? We get 10 x £5m players rather than one £50m player roughly speaking. The value is still going to be abroad, in the main, if we can find the right players.

I think it’s interesting to look at established PL players and compare them to ours.
Would you swap Thomas for Michael Keane? Nathan Collins? Kevin Danso? Mavropanous?
Would you swap Grimes for Tyler Adams? Sander Berge? Sasha Lukic?
Torp for Henderson or James Garner?
Sakamoto for Ryan Christie or Wilson Odobert?
MVE for Jake O’Brien or Kenny Tete?
Rushworth for any keeper in the bottom half?
Rudoni for Ayari, Buendia, Freddie Potts?
Wright or Simms for Richarlison, Barry or Igor Jesus?
Now obviously I’ve cherry picked players from lower mid table teams, and there’s some ‘maybes’ in there. But I believe we’re not as far off as we think.

Thomas I'd swap for Danso & Collins
Henderson is more comparable with Grimes and yes I'd probably swap him
Odobert and Christie are backups for their teams
MVE I wouldnt swap
Rushworth I'd swap for Petrovic, Vicario, Pope, Pickford, Leno, Sels and probably Dubravka if we are just looking at them now and not future value
Wright you would swap for Richarlison or Igor Jesus probably.

Do the same analysis for our first choice XI compared to a pretty honking West Ham team and that gives you a good idea of how much work we would need to do, especially at the back.
