Re: Simms penalty, I think we have all seen that Simms finishing is much better when it's instinctive and he doesn't have time to think. He struggles when he has time and options missing a fair few 1v1's last season. A pen he has too much time and too many options, I was always going to be a disaster.

Lampard will get him working on penalties in training. It was his first penalty as a professional and frankly, like you, I didn’t feel confident.

It is a shame that we were missing our top 3 penalty takers in Wright, Torp and Rudoni. I’m surprised Eccles or Sheaf didn’t take one as they’ve scored in shootouts for us previously and ahead of Simms in the pecking order.

To be fair I'm glad he took it

Being a striker he was always likely to end up taking one at some point, even though I don't think he'll ever be a good penalty taker. It didn't cost us anything in the end and now I'm sure if the same situation arises it will be given to someone else.

Simms seems to be a player who operates best on instinct, give him time to think and the results are patchy.

Don't put yourself down so, Stupot. I think you're pretty decent overall, in the grand scheme of things.

What a mental take! Sheaf is not a finisher. Do you remember his penalty in the fa cup semi!

Grimes has a great Penalty record, should have been him

Rene Higuita (El Loco) scored 35 pens several free kicks and it also famous for the scorpion kick save.

Grimes or Eccles for me. Sheaf's shooting is terrible, very erratic, the last person you want an opportunity to fall to.

Poor captaincy on the day, Eccles wanted to take it, so should've been Overruled by Bidwell.

His penalty in play off final shoot out was perfect high pressure etc.

It was weird...if like u say Grimes has a good record..then it should have been him.

Surely the manager over rules the captain?
It depends what was agreed before the game. Also I think you would be surprised, even at this level it is who just grabs the ball and says I'm taking it!

A lot of clubs now have a system where someone grabs the ball and makes a show like they are going to take it but it's just to draw the attention away from the pre determined kicker who lurks to the side whilst the initial fuss does down.

Except his first touch, jumping under the ball instead of heading it, passing and hitting the ball cleanly, lack of goals ….otherwise a great striker

Precisely Seymour_East.
I thought it was just me that had the same view of him.
But hey, we're in the minority. Even FL thinks he's ok!

Bidwell was the captain for the day, what's the point of having a captain if he doesn't make decisions on behalf of the team.

Don't think Lampard will let it happen again, doesn't look good players undecided who should take a pen.

You lot are well overthinking it, Simms was most likely (rightly or wrongly) the designated taker. Not my first choice but still plenty of better players than him have taken a dud penalty. Yeah Eccles took the ball but that's something that a lot of clubs do to take the heat off the taker.

Not saying he was a good choice but may well have been the choice. I'd be more fucked off if the captain or any individual went over the managers decision

I was not a great penalty but if the goalie had hesitated momentarily or dived the other way it was in, it's not as it is Simms missed the target. I think my preference would be to blast it down the middle at head height as the goalies always seem to dive these days, I can't remember seeing a penalty where the goalie waited till the taker had committed.

Lampard had not addressed the possible situation pre game then?

The captain leads and organized things on the pitch. But he doesn't pick the tactics, formation, who takes corners or throw ins, or for that matter penalty takers

Jimmy Hill said "Strike the ball very hard to hit the stanchion and the goalie has no chance." Killer told the London supporters club something along the lines, hit it as hard as you can down the middle. The American director, (the name escapes me), in his book said a penalty down the middle has the highest percentage chance of scoring.
If the goalie had dived the other way, (usually a 50/50 guess), Simms would have been praised. He did hit it too weakly.
Did someone say we have missed three of our last four penalties? I know Godden who usually scored every pen suddenly missed loads last season.

The problem is fans think a penalty is a given goal. It isn't. Penalties are not easy. Lots are missed even by world class players.

One thing that annoys me is when a keeper saves a penalty it still goes down as a miss.... No it was saved!
