With England doing so well in Russia and just a game/win away from a World Cup Final, I have to be honest I never thought they'd get this far. I was negative and said they'll let us down as usual, but I was wrong. But in a non football thread it got me thinking about negativity and positivity, am I a negative person or a positive one ? If I'm good at something I am confident and assured, and feel like I can't/won't fail.
But if I have go outside my comfort zone I'm not so confident, and can have negative thoughts and uncertainty etc. Some people seem positive all the time,we all know someone like this, while others are the opposite. So any thoughts on this ?

Hard to explain, but I am avery positive person in general terms towards life and situations and the likes of the City and England etc., but at the same time not at all positive about myself and am very self deprecating.

Always been quite shy for the most part and never confident about myself and in myself.

Generally positive though I would say.

I've always been a negative person. That was if things don't work out as I would like I'm not disappointed too much but if things work out better it's a great feeling

I would say I’m now a very positive person. I can be self critical and shy but I’m all for working hard and making things work and not moping about.

When I was younger people always described me as negative and pessimistic. I’m not sure if that was fair at the time or I’ve changed but as I’ve got older I’ve certainly changed my mindset and focus on improving myself and doing whatever I need to do to achieve the outcome I want.

If I hear family or friends being negative now I find it very frustrating.

I like psychology I find it fascinating. I read that most humans have many sides to their personality, and this is normal. I can be extrovert when needed, and introvert too. I dislike loud people but feel uncomfortable around someone who hardly speaks. Now that is a bit complex and deep !

There's a school of thought that depressed people see the world more realistically.

There's a depressing thought!

Anyway, old cynic here (haven't you noticed!) and, dare I say it, it does make me right more often than not(!)

Is nice to be pleasantly surprised when things turn out alright in the end, though.

I tend to be negative (as you may all have noticed) but I'm also a contrarian so if everyone else is negative about something, I tend to be positive about it.
In general, I think I'm positive about things I'm in control of (apart from my terrible procrastination) but negative about things I'm not in control of.
I always expect myself to do well but others to screw up.

I’d agree with that point of view to some extent. Plan for the worst but do your best with what you can control.

I would say on the whole I am positive, but can be very self critical.
The only person who thinks I am negative is my wife, soon to be ex, so bollocks to what she thinks.

For sport I certainly am positive but agree with the ops on England’s chances. At work I am generally worst case scenario then work back from there, does the job but a very cautious way to operate. I am quite introvert anyway which in general can come across as negative and reserved but not necessarily the case in practice

I'm always positive - don't see the point in being negative.

e.g my week will be:
Sun - happy, we're going to win World Cup semi final
Mon -happy, we're going to win World Cup semi final
Tue - happy, we're going to win World Cup semi final
Wed - happy, we're going to win World Cup semi final
.. and if we lose
Thu -sad in morning as we lost , but happy again by the afternoon.

Compared to a negaive person:
Sun - miserable, we're going to lose World Cup semi final
Mon -miserable, we're going to lose World Cup semi final
Tue - miserable, we're going to lose World Cup semi final
Wed - miserable, we're going to lose World Cup semi final
Thu - slightly smug that they were right, but still miserable.

Who had the best week?

You are confusing positivity and negativity with happiness and unhappiness.
You can be negative about something and still be perfectly happy whatever the outcome.

Perhaps there is a common theme in out lives that has made us cynical? I would say I am more negative that positive but I try to look on the bright side. I can be overly hard on myself at times though and expect others to have the same dedicated/commitment to something when working on a common goal. An intern I worked with used to call me Keano

Hahaha I'm actually quite laid back in reality, this came about after my performance on the football pitch and nearly getting sent off in a charity match.

I'm pretty cynical / realistic.

If I think there's no chance of me being able to do something, I won't spend hours trying to do it. Would rather focus on the stuff I know I have a good chance of being able to do

I'm an optimist generally. Whatever it is, I tend to think it'll end up alright and so far that's largely been the case. Could be worse and all that.

It's the time period before the outcome that I'm referring to. I'm positve about the potential outcome and so am happy during the build up to it.
People that are negative about the potential outcome are generally miserable buggers in my experience.
