I saw that Chris Rigg has already played 50 times in the championship. At 17 that’s a great achievement.

Have we got anyone coming through that is going to make it to the first team? I know Andrews and Dausch have been around the first team mostly as bench warmers but clearly they’re not at the level just yet.

Is there anyone currently in our youth setup that will break through?

Andrews highly rated, just like Burroughs and Howley who also went to Scotland and that was it. See Andrews is stuck on the bench again. Our squad is just too big to be giving these sorts of players a chance.

I don’t remember reading about Madders before he broke through at all. Seemed to go straight into the squad. Wilson aside (actually checked and he made his debut at 17) I kinda feel if they’re not pushing the squad at 16/17 then they’re probably not going to make it.

Obikwu looks the closest but it’s a long way from L2 to Champ as a striker.

I believe Obikwu and Dausch were highly thought of before Lampard took over. I dont know what the current coaching staffs thoughts are though. Also heard good things about Sandiford

Our academy has been so shit in recent years, its about time it helped supplement the squad a bit. Echo the above, i've been keeping a close eye on Obikwu, he looks good. Beyond that.. Dausch, Andrews, Sandiford? Be nice if at least one of them could make it here.

I reckon Obikwu's the one, maybe a back-up striker role next season if we're still in the Championship.

i feel as tho many will only get a chance when we have first team injuries, id love to see Obikwu get a chance, but in reality, simms, haji, bassette, BTA, and then theyd prob try tats or EMC up top, then prob Lati to be honest before we see Obikwu get a chance.

Wasn't Isaac Moore really highly thought of? But then, I think, he had a string of injuries that have held him back.

Also the instant we seem to have a good youngest at 16 the likes of man city nab them up for pennies, so no surprise really that we don't see players coming through at that age.

Kai yearn is one who is highly rated, or certainly was when joining us.

He turned a new deal down at Cambridge to progress. Sandiford came with him and has played some international games already

Two brightest talents at the moment, in my opinion:

Jack James - Tricky midfielder that Chelsea approached in the summer. Pretty sure he's still at the club.
Tom Williams - Left back who played for England U15s last year.

Not sure how they're doing for the U18s this year because the club's coverage of the team is non-existant. We have a specific academy Twitter page that seems to actively ignore the 18s.

Wouldn't be surprised if they both got poached in the summer though. We lost two top talents last year: England youth defender Marlow Barrett to Man City and midfielder Kwasi Senyah to Wolves.

Moore did his knee twice and basically missed his entire scholarship. Not sure if he'll ever get back up to speed.

That's a real shame for the lad. Hopefully he'll come through it, or goes on to play lower league football and works his way back up once his body has had time to strengthen.

Love that the OP was asking how much people think they'd get for him, until it was pointed out he was on loan

Problem now with players coming through is bigger teams just picking any talent off. As mentioned above we've lost a couple this season alone.

Almost need someone to go under radar then just develop really late and then luck with pathway being open.

Sad thing is with bigger clubs picking off all talent, fair amount of them will just fizzle out as they will solely play 23s football, then drift into non league when released as they have been lost in the giant fish bowl of a Man City or Chelsea. Where perhaps being at a coventry or small club and staying put, then higher chance of first team football or loan to play proper competitive games. But its hard I get it, when clubs and agents start promising the world.....

Feels like the current goalkeepers of the U21's have been around for a while (Cian Tyler and Luke Bell), but never come close to pushing for a first team appearance, even when we have been struggling with out of form Collins and Wilson.
Are they rated at all in the U21 set up?

How much does it cost to run the academy? We must be losing a sizeable chunk?

Remember, we’ve ‘sold’ a few young players to top 4 sides and have players like Eccles, Andrews and Obikwu coming through who may be able to fetch a good price.

When you’ve come up from L2 to top end Championship in such a short space of time, there a a time lag where your infrastructure needs to catch up. With academy lads, promising players in the past may have went to competitor teams and of course we lost some talented ones we did have.

Im sure there is some kind of income for having a certain level academy. Also hasnt King mentioned it is part of his plan to get the academy to a much better level both ability and facilities

Not sure if there is a passive income for having one.

Think there’s grants but I could be wrong. The real Value as Doug said when he was about Gyok in January is if you sell home grown players you keep 100% of the profit and can claim all of the fee as net profit. Great way to help with FFP

I think we have to be top tier from an academy perspective or consider closing them which would be very sad. They only make economic sense if you can unearth the odd jewel and retain them to become pro’s. Developing 100’s of boys to lose the jewels at 15 ifor minor compensation isn’t sustainable.

Sandiford JR has been on the bench quite a bit recently. I don't know much about him but he must be doing OK to get near the first team

Hopefully give Obikwu a contract extension in the summer and loan him out to league 1 next year.

The higher up the football pyramid we go, the harder for players from a Cat 2 Academy to break through. The top PL teams cherry picking potential talent from us doesn't help.
Think our loan out options need to improve. We need young players on the pitch, not bench warming.

If he was going to make it here, surely we wouldn't of paid good money for Bassette, who's actually younger than Obikwu.

Our academy has been poor in recent years, and needs to be addressed imo.
Maybe that's something Doug will look to improve at some stage.

I think to have a Cat 2 academy the yearly budget has to be £1m and 10(?) full time members of staff.

That’s one thing we can criticise the club for, even for the 7 years robins was here. The academy is not producing players good enough OR we aren’t helping them. Bit of both.

We also lost Thierry Katsukunya to Aston Villa for decent money when SISU were skint. Not sure how he’s doing. Charlie McCann went to Man Utd and may have developed better playing football for us. It does feel like slim pickings in recent times.

My son ( aged 9) has attended a few academy trial days over the past year mainly in London, there's been players there who are in their mid twenties making it pro, even at that age. Quite funny seeing him warm up with 6ft+ grown men!

It’s the limitations to the category 2 academy. It’s alright at the league one and two levels, but the higher up we go the harder it will be to break through
