Everybody did ok, but no real standouts I didn't think. Good 3 points that we probably deserved overall. Thought Southend were very poor.

Burge - 7 took plenty of crosses but was largely untested otherwise

Sterling - 7 looking more composed but potentially gave ball away for goal? Would need to see it back
Willis - 6 outpaced by Hopper for goal. Should have done better
Davies - 7 won everything in air but was a bit rash and a bit of a liability on the ball
Brown - 7 think he's settling in more now

Bayliss - 6 quiet today
Doyle - 6 distribution quite poor I thought again today

Thomas - 7 great dribbler, lack of end product at times but one of our biggest threats
Hiwula - 7 faded 2nd half but thought he was very good coming in from the left in 1st half and got the goal

Chaplin - 6 quiet today, definitely a player in him though. Confident his time will come
Clarke-Harris - 6 won a few headers but his link up play is generally poor and why didn't he shoot immediately after Southend goal?!

None of the subs on long enough for a score. Jodi's goal was a fluke but we'll take it!

Burge - 7 - Solid all round game without really having to make a save. Did very well early on with the shocking backpass from Davies.
Brown - 7 - Probably his best full game for us so far. Looked solid bar one dodgy pass in the 2nd half and I'm please his performances are going in the right direction.
Davies - 7 - Extraordinary in the air today, decent goal ruled out too but not as effective with the ball as last week. I constantly feel he's got a red card in him.
Willis - 6 - Looked comfortable until he was skinned for the goal. He's been very consistent this season - can't help feeling he's carrying some kind of injury this season that means he's not 100% though, seems to end up limping almost every game.
Sterling - 7 - Starting to look like a very classy fullback. Good defensively again and put some decent balls into the box.
Doyle - 6 - Must have been responsible for 50% of our possession conceded today. Awful passing and free kicks but 3 great corners and we scored from 2 (1 disallowed).
Bayliss - 7 - Actually thought he looked a pretty complete centre midfielder today but it's at the expense of some of his wow factor. Am sure Robins is forcing him to be more disciplined with Doyle along side him to compensate for his captain's lack of speed.
Thomas - 7 - A lot of threat and pace to burn but again no finish or killer pass. Hope he's just saving it until his loan is extended for the season.
Hiwula - 6 - Looked lively going forward until his goal but thought the game largely passed him by after that. Showed his strikers instinct to be in the right place at the right time for his goal.
JCH - 6 - Did his job well until we conceded and then he tailed off rapidly.
Chaplin - 6 - Couple of very sweet passes and looks a decent footballer but not close enough to JCH or in the box enough today.

Really solid team performance and sure it will be unchanged team for 3rd game on Tuesday. Defence especially is really starting to look a unit.

IS it wrong of me to be sick to death of Thomas already. Poundland Ryan Kent. Jodi can do it with an end product.

Burge 8 great handling all game. No 9 or 10 as no big saves

Brown 7 getting more solid with each game

Sterling 7 same as brown

Willis 7 solid every gsme now. Maybe should have done better with goal

Davies 8 man mountain and intelligent to cover his teammates too

Doyle 6 passing not good enough today

Bayliss 6 good battling display

Thomas 7 lacks end product but so so dangerous and his speed helps us retrieve ball on so many occasions

Hiwula 6 scored a goal but less involved today

Jch 6 some criminal decision making not to shoot. Fell over alot. But still did ok

Chaplin 6 not involved enough. Looked good when he was but I think there is so much more to come from him

Jones 6 goalllll

Shipley 6 came on and got in dangerous attacking positions. All I ever asked of him

Bakayoko n/a

Think that's why he's only here til January. I like him though as his running and movement opens the game up

Interesting comment about Bayliss Esoterica. I agree that he’s having to be far more disciplined when he’s in a middle two, especially with Thomas and Hiwula (both very attacking) wide.

Agree, he scares the shit out of defenders with his pace and constant willingness to attack...
I also think derby will see this is the best place for him as he is obviously a bit raw, but other than a fully fit Jones we don’t have anyone half as dangerous out wide.

Really glad to see some of the signings with question marks still hanging over them bedding in. Still think Ogogo will come good in the end as well.

It's a good sign when no one is below a 6. Will win more than we will lose if we are that consistent.

Doyles set peice deliveries seem to be improving but his passing in general play is going to cost us at points this season. I'd like to see Kelly and Bayliss at some point.

Woke up with a big hangover.

Jonson was phenomenal. Beat their defenders time and time again in the air.

Dujon continues to improve.

Thomas ran rings round them at times.

Bayliss got stuck in.

Did jch really beat them time and time again? I thought he lost the large majority of headers

JCH is so inconsistant has 1 in 3 good games for me! when he is on it he is unplayable when hes not he reverts to dropping to the floor when his legs get tired.

I watched him yesterday he didnt have an option so errr 'won' us a free kick but as his fitness levels improve his performances are getting better if he started chipping in with goals now i am sure his frailties would be overlooked to an extent, he is far from the finished article but as I say gradually improving

I thought he played quite well yesterday and gave their defence a hard time. While he didn't win everything in the air he did win his fair share. He laid off a lovely cushioned header for Hiwula who blazed the chance over early in the game, and also headed on Doyle's corner for Hiwula's goal. Should have hit the target soon after that with a headed chance of his own, and taking chances himself seems a bit of a weak point at the moment. Also, while I know its not the main reason to pick a forward, he is also a big help defending set pieces, where he is often the one to clear the danger, and the only time they really threatened from one yesterday was after he had been subbed.

We must be the only fans in the world who seem to measure a number 9 worth by the headers he wins against a centre half

Or if they get pushed off the ball easily which results in a goal for them...

You are always commenting on the heading thing - how many centre forwards win headers against us?

The one game that showed how a strong physical centre forward can influence things in this league was Plymouth. Everyone was obsessing with Lameries and his typical featherweight efforts but the reason they came into the game was that they had a big forward who gabevthe two centre halves work to do.

That’s his obvious strength. He can at times pull both the full back and centre half out of play with diagonal runs. He does tire them physically and mentally. I don’t think it’s a co-incidence we are scoring late goals due to his work rate

He does seem to get down when things aren’t working I agree and it needs to be worked on. The main reason he is stuck where he is though is his lack of goals - with a better ratio he’d be a valuable player on the transfer market.

I replied to somebody saying he beat them time and time again in the air. He didn't.

He also lost the ball easily for their goal also.

Which occasionally will happen and there was ample opportunity after to stop the threat but you are always commenting on match threads lack of headers win against a centre half. Centre halves win most headers.

Isn't that the role of a target man? Or is that made up?

Not really, it was pretty much a ball over the top and a good finish.
