You have to say that's a bargain by today's prices. That said, I wasn't entirely convinced he'd make it at Championship level (which is probably harsh in retrospect, you forget how young he was whilst on loan here).

Maybe, I'm not so sure. Personally, I doubt whether his price tag would've changed a great deal if he were to be sold by Newcastle now. (Assuming his previous career was exactly the same prior to moving to Blackburn). He only moved around 2 years ago, the market was just as erratic as it was then. Also, if you take into account his age at the time, and that he seemingly struggled to showcase his full potential at Barnsley or Bolton, his price tag at the time was probably fair. Of course, Newcastle will probably be slightly regretting it now, but Premier League clubs are known to be ruthless when it comes to letting emerging talent go and to be fair to them Armstrong didn't really make much of a case for being retained as he just wasn't fulfilling Newcastle's expectations during his loan spells.

Armstrong has done better than I ever thought he would. He was obviously very good at goalscoring with us - great movement, pace and finishing. But the rest of his game was poor in my view. Clearly developed really well in last few years. Very pleased for him.
