Player of the Season - early contenders? (1 Viewer)

With three quarters of the season now behind us but a potentially key 11 games left, what are your thoughts on player of the season so far?*

My top 5:

Willis - has to be right up there purely for consistency of performance across the whole season.
Kelly - although he missed most of the first half of the season, he is absolutely key to enabling us to play the style of football we are now. If only he had been fit all season.
Sterling - surely the most improved player of the season once he settled into first team football and like Willis has been very consistent since. Also contributed in attack too although feel his performance level has dropped slightly in the last 4 or 5 games. Bit of first season fatigue creeping in?
Hyam - Like Kelly, his ability to both pass and carry the ball is really important to the way we play. While relative to the squad he has been a consistent performer, I don't feel he's been quite at Willis' level over the whole season.
Thomas - Pace to burn and exciting to watch but has to be an outsider with the sheer quantity of chances he's squandered.

* Feel like a 14 year old not 40 year old making threads like this but really worn out by the politics so wanted more footy talk!

Could only be Sterling or Willis for me, Sterling just edged it for the assists too. Will be some player, but I imagine he'll have to leave Chelsea to fulfil his potential - perhaps with us in the Championship next season

Kelly for me. His role in the team and stepping up in replacement of Doyle has been key this season.

Sterling is by far our best player imo, but am a little bit anti giving it to a loanee.

As everything stands, Sterling for me. Took a barage of abuse early on, can't be easy as a young kid, took it on the chin and now is clearly a cut above at this level. Would be happy to see Hyam or Willis win it though. Kelly has been excellent since he's come in but hasn't played near enough games to win it in my opinion.

Either of the centre backs Hyam or Willis but for me Willis just has the edge at the moment.

Sterling has improved with games over the season and we will be sending back to Chelsea a far better and nearer to being ready player which should mean they send more to us in the future, I think he will go out again next year and then be pushing at Chelsea if he keeps progressing as he has been.

It’s between these two for me.

Slightly drawn towards Willis at this stage as he’s played more games and stepped up massively since his last spell in L1. His time in L2 made a man of him and did his career the world of good improving his weaknesses massively.

However what Liam Kelly is doing in the side now after the injuries that have kept him out leading a young talented team in the middle of the park his gonna run him close in the last 11 games.

In my view, Kelly is absolutely key to what we do in both attack and defence. If only he had the durability of Doyle!

Agree 100% on that.

People say he’s negative but that’s nonsense in my eyes. He’s composed and calculated being wise with the ball.

He has been over cautious at times...possibly down to Robins instructions and set up. However in the last few games his thoughts have been progressing the ball forward. Second half Saturday he showed a complete range of passes: short and intricate as well as 40-50yd raking balls turning defence into attack and switching play.

Sterling all day as far as im concerned. After his early season jitters he's settled into a reliable line of defence and a real attacking threat with at least five assists. Look's a class above most of the time and will undoubtedly go on to play at the top level. Kelly & Willis have also been phenomenal tbf

His role, as I see it, is to set our tempo. We’re trying to play a possession based game, and sometimes you need patience on the ball to feel out the defence. We’ve got attacking players like Thomas, Bright and Bayliss so Kelly isn’t there to be that attacking, creative spark. He distributes in attack, and in defence he organises and gets interceptions in — iirc (this was a while ago so may have changed), isn’t he quite high up in the interceptions stats?

A lot of that work goes under the radar a bit, because it isn’t as flashy as, say, one of Bright’s skilful turns in our own half.

Problem is that they also have Reece James (currently on loan at Wigan) who is supposed to be superb too. Always going to be very tough to break into that side.

Same as mucca’s thoughts.

For me It’s not, him it’s his role or instruction given from MR. If the midfield was to be overly offensive then we’d be in more trouble and wasteful with the ball as a result.

He’s pivotal currently to the side

Nope. Their ban is supposed to be for this summer and next Jan. But as they've appealed they'll probably be able to trade in the window this summer.

I did read that uefa were going to keep them banned while they apppeal.

Willis sterling thomas and kelly can be only contenders. Hiwulla outsider. Burge shouldnt be in the conversation

Hyam for me just ahead of Willis. Mentions too for Sterling and Thomas. Burge May have bee worth a mention before Christmas but has reverted to type and no votes tells it’s own story.

Hyam for me as well as he's came in and made the centre half spot his own. His distribution is very good too.

With regards to players stepping up I think the same could be said for Hyam as his rise in the last 18 months has been nothing short of phenomenal. Originally brought in as a development player after being released from Reading he's now arguably one of the most accomplished CB's in the league. It was a tough decision between the two but Hyam wins it for me.

Stockdale for me. Gave 100% every performance and was the foundation of 100% points taken when he was on the Pitch.

Tough one, but so far this season as a whole Between Sterling and Willis, Sterling just shades it.

Kelly has been immense, but not played enough imo.Hiwula has done also overall considering hes been played mostly out wide.

Plenty can change yet if we manage to get to Play offs, big if, Hiwula will have a chance if he bangs them in and gets the goals were craving for.
