Pixie Lott will star as Mary in Sweet Baby Jesus, a modern-day reworking of the Nativity story.

The 'Turn It Up' singer has stepped into the role once earmarked for Britney Spears, and will appear opposite Sam Rockwell, Bette Midler and Kim Cattrall in the comedy project, reports Deadline.

Rockwell is circling the role of Joe, a man taking his pregnant young girlfriend to Bethlehem, Maryland, Midler is in line to play innkeeper Eleanor and Cattrall is Mary's mother Darlene.

The project's producer Philippe Rebboah said of the Steve Blair-penned Jesus screenplay: "It made me laugh out loud. The script has such fun subverting the treasured details of the Nativity - posing the question, 'What would we do if it all happened again?'"

Peter Hewitt (Garfield) is on board to direct the $10 million movie, which will shoot in Maryland and Ireland.
