Should McSheff take the penalties now that he is back form injury?

He has better composure in front of goal than Juke I would say.

I think that's a little harsh on Juke. He was fairly consistent from the spot until Saturday.

So juke misses one and that's it, time to change taker! I just found it strange that he blasted it, he normally places them.

Pressure situation in stoppage time...

Experience vs immaturity

I think Jukes fine for now. Pressure got to him. He never usually blasts penalties.

He normally blasts them in the bottom corner to the keepers left. V Derby he placed it to the keepers right. I guess he wasn't sure which way to go this time so went to just hammer it down the middle. A keeper dives 9/10 so there was nothing wrong with the idea just bad execution!

And someone mentioned immaturity in a pressure situation... His first goal for the club was a stoppage time penalty away from home...

Juke was made to wait an excessively long time to take it ,just another tick against the officials for me, Gorks arm were all over him throughout the match

Didn't Macca miss one in a friendly the other week?

Id let Lukas keep em, and im sure AT will, but I bet Sheffers will sulk!

This is the same Sheffers tho that was on a hat trick (I believe) V Walsall in the 6 1 win and fluffed it. Atleast Juke had a bit of pressure on him, so had reason to miss!

Plus if everyone got demoted after missing a pen, a certain Mr Ward wouldnt have kept the duty after that pathetic miss V Southampton

Give him the next one, if he misses that maybe switch to McSheffrey. TBF to Lukas, all his pens before Saturday have been superb. It's the one time he usually looks like a dead-eye finisher! Plus it's good to keep a strikers goal-tally ticking over, keeps confidence up..unless he starts missing them all, of course.

He took one but had it saved I think. Would have been his fourth goal in that game.

I think Macca should take the pens.
That's not because Juke missed against Reading, but just because I think he would be better.

Nothing wrong with the Juke taking them, some get saved some go over or wide but most go in. He still ticks the final box for me.

I'd like Sheffers to take them, not because Juke missed but because I've wanted him to take them since he returned, he is a penalty king! He is a much more composed finisher, Juke scored all his pens before this one but I still never had full confidence when he steps up to take it.

Penalty King who has also missed penalties in the past? I dont think there is such a thing as a penalty king. Even Lampard who could probably come close to such a title misses them now and again!

Le Tissier? Has the best record, I expect. Molby was pretty lethal, too. Damn that hatrick in the League Cup...

To be fair Lampard is an awful penalty taker. Sheffers scored some cracking pens into the top corners. I don't ever remember McSheffrey missing the target from a pen although if someone can point out a time that he did.. I know he has had a couple saved. And I'm talking about in a competitive match not a friendly!

I would have given them to Clingan, I think before he came to us he was penalty taker for Norwich. I remember he missed his first one for us against Swansea at home and he never took another one again. I just think Clingan is not the type of player to lose his head in a pressure situation and is technically one of the best players and has a very clean strike.

To be fair, he was the first name who came into my head when thinking of someone who is pretty consistant when it comes to penalty's. He may not be the best in some peoples opinions, which is fine, but he has got a pretty good conversion rate if memory serves me correct (im sure one of the football shows ananlysed his conversion rate once).

McSheffrey missed one in the 6-1 win over Wallsall, as I already mentioned in this thread (I think it was this one). Im sure there are others, but this one is remembered as he inisted on having the ball to attempt to get his hat trick, even though Morrell also had a brace himself.

Out of interest (and boredom) Ive just been onto google. The best info around penalties scored (Premiership info only im afraid, but as the above was around Lampard, I dont see why I shouldnt share the result) is as follows. Lampard and Le Tissier are both mentioned, but flying away with the amount of Premiership pens converted was Alan Shearer. One ex player of ours makes the list too, in Gary McCallister:

Premier League penalties scored
Alan Shearer 58
Matthew Le Tissier 24
Thierry Henry 23
David Unsworth 23
Teddy Sheringham 21
Frank Lampard 19
Ruud van Nistelrooy 19
Peter Beardsley 18
Gareth Barry 17
Robbie Fowler 17
Gary McAllister 17

Stats taken from Sky Sports, and were recorded in January 2009 so are not up to date

McAllister was great at them unless Uri Geller made the spot move..

I guess Le Tiss goes back into pre-Prem days. He was certainly playing well before Shearer, and I'm sure he has the best conversion rate. I think he only missed one ever.

About the same as G alexander ,iknow its not the same division but you'd want him to take one in a playoff final

Alexander got one on Saturday didn't he. Yeah you're right, he's only missed one or two in his career also.

Juke to continue for me too. All this about Mcsheffrey being a more composed finisher is utter rubbish, he's skied more chances from a similar distance to the pen than Juke, most of them going even higher than Jukes pen

Was that pen for his fourth goal?

Macca missed that pen in a reserve game. He's this worst pen taker in the world, because he missed 1 pen. Just like Juke.

Juke to carry on, everyone misses penalties at some point. Pressure just got to him a bit.

Only mistake he has made all season. Keep up the good work Juke

He miscued the ball and dragged it wide, I wouldn't say he lost his head he just made poor contact with the ball. unlike Juke who struck it cleanly but just completely lost his head and put it about 20 feet over the cross bar.

Pressure. Clutch plays, as the Yanks say. We don't have many players like that, haven't for a long time. Which is why they play at our level.

Mmm...I wonder how many threads there would have been if Bell or McSheff had ballooned the penalty?

I wouldn't say juke lost his head. He just leant back and hit it too well. Unlike Clingan who panicked, did the strangest run up for a pen I've ever seen and smashed it 5ft wide of the keepers right hand post!
