Having a debate with a mate, who claims peep show is 'not funny' and 'one of the worst comedies ever'

I've told him he's too thick to understand it. Where do you lot rank it? Id even go as far to put it in the top 5 comedies of all time

1. Only Fools
2. Fawlty Towers
3. Peep Show
4. The Office
5. Alan Partridge

Thoughts?

Never seen Peep Show but I like David Mitchell on Would I Lie To You (also like Lee Mack) so I guess I would find Peep Show funny.

I have to say, I gave Peep Show a go a few years ago, and it didn't "do it" for me. Maybe it just went over my head.
But Miranda? Seriously??

I watched it when it was first came out on C4 and loved it. The first couple of series were excellent but they seemed to run out of ideas a bit after that but it picked up again towards the end, the first series really is excellent and I’d even say groundbreaking. I’d definitely put it in the top 3 comedies.

It is a brilliant show.

Unlike the 'solo' efforts of the two protagonists, which are uniformly dire. Take those two out of peep show and they are miserably unfunny.

It's definitely in my top 5 comedies of all time. As they kept announcing new series I was worried they'd eventually go too far and ruin it... but it stayed consistently funny if not got better as it went on. I could easily put on any episode at random and know it would be great, which is so rare for anything with that many episodes.

My broad list is along the lines of...
- Peep Show
- The Office (UK)
- I'm Alan Partridge (I'd put Mid Morning Matters up there with it as well)
- Bottom
- Inside No. 9 (not strictly "comedy," but I love what Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton do with their comedy view on horror).

Fawlty Towers, IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh, Fast Show, Phoenix Nights, Red Dwarf and 15 Storeys High all get notable mentions.

I like Peep Show, not sure it's in the top 5 of all time but it is very good and occasionally brilliant.

Peep Show was great but went on too long and became a pastiche of itself which lowers it's ranking for me.

The Mitchell and Webb sketch show had it's moments but was more miss than hit.

I watched the first series and didn't like it, despite loving Bruiser which was an old Mitchell and Webb sketch show that was, in reality, fairly shit. Then I tried it again, got into it, and loved it.

I'd put Alan Partridge at the top of my list (although the latest series was a bit meh). Because of the impact on my childhood / adolescence I'd put Bottom near the top too. The Detectives for the same reason - corny comedy that just made me belly laugh. Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Dads Army - all classics that would vie for a place near the top as well. And an honourable mention for the radio series' of Count Arthur Strong, Just a Minute, and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

To be fair the first time I watched it I wasn’t instantly hooked, but after a few episodes I was all in.

Not sure the exact order, but my top comedies would consist of:

The Office
Alan Partridge
Peep Show
Phoenix Nights
Extras
The Office (US) (I really didn’t want to like it, but everything after series 1 is brilliant)
Parks and Recreation
The Royle Family
Modern Family (guilty pleasure! It does have a bit too much American comedy at times, but equally it has some excellent comedy moments)

One of the things with Partridge and Bottom is that they're still as sharp and funny today as they ever were. I still watch Bottom and I'm Alan Partridge a lot and they were both made in the 90s. Most stuff from that era hasn't aged well at all.

I stuck Blackadder on while browsing Netflix the other night and found it to be far too broad. As a kid I laughed at it because of the obvious jokes and silly faces but now it just bores me. The same can be said for a lot of classic British comedies.

I'd mostly watch,

Bottom
The Office
Extras
Alan Partridge (any incarnation)
Curb Your Enthusiasm
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

There are others I like but they're the main stays.

which version of The Office?

I agree with you on the ‘classics’, stumbled across Fawlty Towers and it was cheap & just stupid, looked like it cost about a tenner to make.

The English The Office is my favourite. I liked The US one a lot but it did go down hill considerably towards the end.

Wasn't Fawlty Towers a bit racist as well, especially towards the Irish?

Yeah I guess you’re right, but that finale- the most perfect end to a series of all time.

Can't believe I missed Curb Your Enthisiasm off my list. Laughed my socks off at that so many times. I bought every box set up to series 7 or so (whichever season was supposed to be the last before they decided it wasn't) and didn't regret a penny of it. Larry David's smirk on it's own makes me laugh.

I bought the box set of Operation Good Guys, but I didn't find it funny in the slightest, despite never missing an episode when it was first broadcast. That's one that really hurts, because I remember loving it at the time.

I forgot to add Still Game to my list too. Another classic.

It’s an age thing - very very good was Porridge and the early Fools and horses ( once the women arrived it went downhill) if I had asked my father he would have said Steptoe and son - and till death us depart with Alf Garnett - now that one would open a few eyes - very funny
