Paul Gascoigne has been injured in a car crash in Newcastle.

The former England footballer was taken to hospital in the early hours of this morning after the incident, the Daily Mail reports.

A spokeswoman for Newcastle General Hospital said: "He’s in hospital and he was brought in following a car accident. We are not commenting further but he is in a comfortable condition."

According to BBC News, Gascoigne was a passenger in a Vauxhall Astra which is believed to have left the road and hit a signpost at around 9.45pm at Sandhill.

A friend told the broadcaster that the ex-Tottenham and Lazio player had not been badly hurt in the crash.

Police have arrested an unnamed 36-year-old woman on suspicion of drink driving.
