Watching the coverage of the opening ceremony and asked my 8 year old what sort of disabilities she thought the competitors mi
She guessed at blind people and those with limbs missing ....... but then went on to add, people who had no hair or who were pregnant.
Nope. Feel the same way.
Trying to explain to my daughter yesterday and found it really hard to do so. I could only come up with the fact that as spectator sports they fall just a little short on the whole.
I admire these athletes and I respect them and inspired by them but when you have seen the same sports played at the highest level it is hard to find the same degree of excitement for something which unfortunately is something that comes up just a tad short.
The sports I am more interested in will be the sports that have been adapted for people with disabilities and have almost become completely different sports in their own rights.
Saw a bit of the blind football covered in a news programme and though I really was amazed by these blind people identifying a ball with a bell in it and showing some amazing skill, it was all a bit too much of a mess and kick and rush for me.
Will try and watch some but it just doesn't excite me to any degree. Find the overwhelming feeling is one of sympathy and respect and admiration for the individuals rather than excitement for the events themselves.
I do very much understand the importance of the event and games though. Disability is still very much a taboo in many corners of the globe and we need to change that perception.
I thought the ceremony was good, a bit long but good - Loved the Stephen Hawking quote of "do not look down at your feet but up to the stars"
On another note why has he not got a knighthood!
Yeah, Hawking was good. The Prospero thing though got a bit up it's own arse somewhat I thought and it all got a bit to arty and intellectual for my liking.
Ohh and does the Queen ever smile?
Channel 4 coverage was shite! The adverts were a disgrace, especially when they repeated one of them twice!
Also the stadium announcer said, please stand, if you can for the paralympic anthem... But harsh!!
My daughter just came out with a joke.
What sort of major sporting event do the tropical birds take part in every 4 years?
The Parrotlympics
Inherited your poor humour I see :claping hands:She is only 8.
