Nothing sums up why I hate the new obsession with assists more than the fact that people are acting like Palmer’s ‘assist’ against Oxford is some sort of meaningful contribution. He passed the ball sideways to BTA, 25 yards out of from goal, who then whacked the ball into the leg of a defender and, thanks to a massive stroke of luck, it’s ended up in the back of the net.

I think oxford in the cup summed palmer up , had a relatively decent game and oxford had 3 shots until the 88th minute or something stupid like that .. then started passing wild and directly lead to oxford having 3 chances in about 4 minutes before being subbed

Slightly misleading due to the fact that in previous seasons he's had players like Hamer and O'hare in the midfield ahead of him, who were more attacking midfielders.

How many of those appearances were starts for example?

This season he's been the main creative midfielder and already has good returns, all be it from a small number of games.

Exactly and you’ve implicitly shown the arguments for letting him go. First and foremost, there’s a reason he wasn’t a starter. Second, we’ve improved as a club and need better players than Palmer. Finally, Palmer hasn’t been fit enough to play 30+ games as a starter.

Over a 46 league campaign, I’d bet the (hypothetical) house that Rudoni will more goal contributions than Palmer. Just as he had done last season and 22/23.

He was below O'Hare on Shot Creating Actions last season per 90 and Ayari and only a tiny margin ahead of a half fit Torp.

Need the PL through ball stat to argue back here really. O’Hare can’t weight a pass. Torp can but isn’t an AM IMO, Ayari I thought had potential and is a PL player now.

You quite literally just said apparently that half those don't count. Even for you it's mental how much you pick and choose what you want.

Palmer played a part in 38 games last season (including cups). !6 starts and he was subbed off in 12 of those matches, and 22 matches he was a substitute, never really been more than a squad player, but a useful one. Presuming we get 5 million plus for him, great business, at the 750K mark, all depends in who we get in his place

Id be very dissapointed of he left without an adequate replacement.

There is zero doubt for me he has the ability to change ganes and has the MOST x factor in our current squad.

My biggest complaint of him is hes somewhat of a flat track bully...ie good against shite sides and hasnt really delivered against the top sides.

Palmer often got the weight of his passing wrong, even the one to Simms at Bristol was overhit. Torp is most likely of the players we've got currently to slip a good ball through.

Surely the only player who should get an assist for BTAs goal is their defender !

Agreed.

He has flair, no one can deny that but the game moving further away from ‘flair’ players. He’s inefficient and tries a lot of low probability tricks and flicks, hence his output has been low.

He’s a good rotation option, unfortunately, his wages are not in that band. Shipping him could be the difference in bringing in another player and, more importantly, not have to consider selling a star player, like Sheaf.

He completed 0.75 through balls per game last year, next most of anyone currently in the squad was Sakamoto with 0.29.

He was the only one trying/making those passes last year.

I think Rudoni will make a fair few this season, but KP was definitely the stand out for through balls last season, no one comes close really.

I'm a fan of his but he's not irreplaceable. But that's the key. If we bring someone else in that's fine. If we are just losing him then it makes us weaker.

Yes, this is one good area. Now look at how he ranks overall when it comes to successful passes and completion rate %. Look at successful dribbles (%) compared to his dribbles and successful dribbles and again at shots and shot accuracy.

It paints a picture: high volume of attempts, low volume of success. In other words, inefficient with his use of the ball which is why so many people get frustrated with him.

You can keep putting out all these stats but he’s probably just said, I expect to start when fit and Doug and MR have looked at the accounts and said see ya then !

That’s valid when you score and assist as many goals as KDB. Less so when your they can be counted on 1 hand.

I struggle to remember many games where Palmer’s individual performance was crucial to us picking up points. His goal vs Bristol last Saturday might have been the first one he’s scored for us that actually meant anything off the top of my head. All his other goals came either in losses or late on in games where we were already winning I think.
