We used to have that system. Still got my card.

There were two problems. People never remembered what ticket they'd booked and as they didn't have anything that was physically printed showing what seat they are booked it became a free for all. Not so much of an issue when there's loads of empty seats but still not ideal.

The other issue was people claiming that they'd loaded a ticket but it wasn't working and the stewards letting them through. That could be solved by making them go to the ticket office to get a paper ticket but that would just add to the queue there.

Is that confirmed? If that's right they're shooting themselves in the foot. How are they going to encourage people to buy in advance if its cheaper on the gate?
