For me - Michael Doyle. Clogger whose penchant for bookings/ sending offs masked his limited ability.
To a lesser extent, Dean Emerson always seemed to have got a lot of praise. Was just a teenager in his pomp, but never saw it myself. Always injured and had a terrible moustache.
PS Emerson, before that Sheffield Wednesday wanker crocked him was seen as potentially Brian Robson's successor in the England Squad (and that is ITK)

More controversial but I also think McAllister has a better reputation than he deserved here. Not doubting he was a very good player, but he made us one dimensional because the team were clearly told to play through him so opposition teams just marked him out of the game and we had nothing. I also thought his corners were all too floaty, near post looking for a flick on.
Gotta disagree on this one. Scored 6 in like 13 games and it was the only time Doyle looked like a decent midfielder.Dennis Wise
I remember reading a Pompey fans appraisal of him when he joined us. It was something like, “I’m never really too sure what he does when he plays, but we miss him when he doesn’t”.I think Doyle is overstated even in his second spell, Kelly a more important player imo.

I only properly remember his last season here when he was class along with Keane, Hadji, Chippo and Palmer. He's clearly a quality player when he has quality around him, but I've heard a few people say he was a waste of money before that season (3 million on a 32 year old, when we didn't have 3 million), and we had our best run of form while he was out injured (our still to this day, record breaking 6 wins in a row), and we went to crap when he came back into the team as he slowed it down too much.I was young when he was here but I recall him being injured for his first 2 seasons and class in his final season just in time to do a runner to Liverpool.
