Roy Wegerle didn't live up to expectations and deliver much either

Fully agree who needs Cantona when we've got Wegerle. Well actually we did, Blackburn certainly got the better side of that deal

Left back was an area we had trouble with. Downs, Morgan, Edwards, Burrows, Sansom. We were weak there for a while

We've been weak there for 45 years - Bobby Macdonald being the last truly good LB we had.
And please, don't mention Stuart Pearce who only became a colossus after he left and went to Forest.

A little harsh on Danny Fox.

Dion absolutely should have been in the 98 squad - the issue I suppose was that shearer would never have been subbed off, so you’d have to be a partner for him….
The others then went arguably would have been better or already established partnerships - sheringham, Owen, Ferdinand, even Merson with his style of play.
shame.

The 98 squad was bizzare

Dion should have been there, as should have Gazza albeit he gave Hoddle every excuse to not take him

Also, as much as he is known for being a tin foil hat wearing lunatic these days, so should have Le Tiss - The most criminally under-utilised England player of his generation for me

Cobi Jones was mentioned on another thread.

Was he rated by anyone? He could run very fast in a straight line, I'll give him that.

For the division we were in at the time I would suggest Chris Stokes was a good left back. Danny Fox was class too

I liked Wegerle.

He was inconsistent and struck me as needing a lot of "Man Management" to get the best out of him. Gould certainly couldn't do that.

Phil Neal got a tune out of him once Gould left during the remainder of that 93-94 season. His performance at Spurs on New Years Day 1994 was immense.

Once Big Ron came in during the next season he was frozen out and left that summer.

Yeah Dan Fox was decent. Difficult to base the criteria on any level other than we are currently, or higher - For a true appraisal of talent.
Chris Stokes when he wasn't injured was a decent lower level full back.
Still not budging on my opinion re Bobby MacDonald tho. - Didn't half get a nasty reception when he came back to HR for the first time with Man City. Tommy Hutch fared better.

I remember him coming off the bench in his 2nd season with ( after being injured for over a year since signing)
Within 5 mins he was hobbling off with McCallister shouting dogs abuse at him at the time. He never played again.

Only time I’ve ever been hit by the ball was a Keith O’Neill shot. He hit the bar in the warm up and it looped on to me. Spilled my tea everywhere.

I got my hand to one that Noel Whelan spanked into the crowd once. It stung for about 20 minutes afterwards.

I remember once there was a guy in the West Terrace leaning on a barrier reading his programme whist the players were warming up; Gary McAllister thrashed one towards goal, which missed and smacked the guy square in the face whilst he wasn't paying attention. He had to be taken away.

Paul Telfer - Strachan's favourite, said he was the best athlete at the club. He was also one of those footballers who has no interest in football outside of playing on a Saturday.

Yes. He was worse.

Novelty signings to boost exposure, I don't think it was footballing reasons.

You are having a laugh. Stuart Pearce was great for us from the very first game. Despite coming from non league he never looked out a place at our level (which was top flight).

Josh Eccles - adored by many but truly a terrible footballer.

Because he's local, he must have a lot of family and friends on this forum brainwashing the majority with their overinflated opinions

John Fleck.

Was fantastic for Sheff United and was decent when they got back in the prem. Think he was even linked with Arsenal at one stage but picked up a few injuries.

Stuart Robson was a brilliant player and very good for us. He was a crock when we signed him. But could still put in a magical and energetic 60 minutes for us. He had vision and a full golf bag of passing ranges. He could close people down and do the dirty work.

The fact he was out on the pitch warming up stretching 20 minutes before any other player showed his professionalism and desire to get his damaged body through another game.

Also the fact he punched the unsympathetic and arrogant Phil Neal in the face in Bobby Gould's office, elevates his status even more

With regards to Dublin and missing out on the World Cup 98 - I was definitely advocating him being part of it and disappointed when he didn’t make it, but the standard of strikers we had in the mid-to-late 90s was insane- Shearer/Owen/ Fowler/ Ferdinand/ Wright/ Sutton/ Le Tissier/ Sheringham etc

What happened there then??

Always remember a game at HR where Robson had a great battle against Chris Waddle and came out on top

Robson told them he wasn't fit for Saturday and Neal who had never had a serious injury in his career suggested he was shirking (re my previous post Robson was crocked and went to extraordinary lengths to turn out for team). So Robson punched him in the face.
