Wright was dreadful, yet Simms didn't get one minute, bizarre

Not saying he shouldn't have brought Simms on at some point but I'm guessing in respect of the 2nd leg FL had penalties in the back of his mind, and would have seen Wright as a better option in that scenario than Simms.

In retrospect though when Eccles was forced off right at the end when we were facing that last minute corner, it might have been a better idea to bring on Simms rather than Allen.

I think Siims might have done better with the open goal that Wright headed wide by yards with about a min to go of normal.time.

Played well the previous 2 home games, I thought. Showed a lot more aggression than previously. Think everyone is looking for a stick to beat individuals out of frustration. If we'd won by a couple (which we probably should have) then there wouldn't be this shed loads of posts.

Although Simms has scored a few headed goals recently most have been from a few yards out that he couldn't miss. I might be wrong but I don't recall seeing him score or even get in position to score from the type of chance Wright missed. For a player of his physique Simms gets dominated in the air by most of his defensive markers. Ironically though he is quite good in the air when helping out defensively, but I don't know why that is so.

You say both our strikers are shit. Can you explain then why Simms had the best goals scored to minutes played in the league. The most shots on target per 90 minutes in the league and the second highest shots per 90 minutes played in the league.
Those stats tend to show if he’s given game time he gives a better return than any other striker in the league. Perhaps the issue is that for some reason our coaching staff seem to be ignoring those facts.

Simms not playing a minute in the play offs last season told you everything Lampard thinks of him. Why we did not make a centre forward a priority in the summer transfer window completely baffled me.

Neither of them are good enough, come the end of the season they’ll both still have pretty decent numbers but the reality is they both go missing for big chunks of the season which is very frustrating.

Would love a Matty Godden esque reincarnation myself.

On the flip side…It is quite hilarious how all three of our strikers are on 10 goals and we all still moan about them. Anyone else would love to have that in their squad.

That just means Frank was wrong in play offs. Nothing else. We lost. Simms has scored 10 in the last 13 starts.

That's why Frank Lampard wanted to bring in another striker, if you only have three strikers one gets injured or suspended just leaves you with two that aren't very good.

And I don't just mean Bamford.

All strikers go missing though, quite often it can be because of the lack service they receive. Likewise, all have strengths and weaknesses.
Whilst I can see the appeal of a Gooden style player he would need to give a better return than Godden did as he is well behind both Wright and Simms for goals scored against minutes played and his most prolific season was in Division 1. If you take Goddens penalties out of the equation he is well over half an hour longer for each goal scored.
To me, we have to accept they are playing this standard for a reason and I think your final point is so true. The wouldn’t be many clubs in the Championship that would turn down the opportunity to have 3 players all in double figures.

Our 2 strikers are too much alike. If an opposition centreback has one in his pocket he has both. We need a fast poacher. We don't vary attack enough. We don't get the ball into the area quickly enough as our forwards are offside on the second phase of the attack.

It was never about what they or the others would have done - It would have been universally acknowledged we would have been relegated in probably record time.
It's about the millions that short visited would have yielded and again following relegation.

I’ll be honest I think Lampard is due some criticism on his management of our strikers.

Both have had good patches and rough patches but what I don’t understand is why Lampard prioritises an out of form Wright for an inform Simms. I’d be disinterested too if I got player of the month in November only to be dropped for my efforts

The fact we have BTA 10, Simms 10, Wright 10 suggests the strikers aren’t necessarily letting us down. It’s the goals conceded column that has let us down when compared to Middlesbrough and Ipswich.

Our defence is atrocious - Absolutely no hiding that fact.
What's disappeared is our ability to outgun the opposition courtesy of our cavalier front foot approach.
3 conceded at Derby - We won. 2 conceded at M'boro - We won. 2 conceded at home to WBA - We won.
9 of Wright's 10 goals were scored by early October. Simms gets a temporary pass owing to Lampard's long held reluctance to start him.

I don't think I've ever seen either of them leap like a salmon to power a header in off the underside of the crossbar, I just hope they can both find their shooting boots between now and the end of the season, when is BTA back we could give him the role

wright struggled as soon as we lost Asante, Asante‘s brilliant at Taking players away and making room, wrights too isolated, needs the service, and that’s been our problem all season, wev‘e got a brilliant forward 4. Asante, wright, EMC and esse/saka , you only need to lose one of those and we’re not the same, you’ll see the difference once Asante and EMC are back in,

Some on here should hang their heads with the negativity and abuse that Simms gets.
Every time he has been given a decent starting run in the team he scores. got to question Lampards decision making on dropping him for wright every time he was available.
Simms has started 10 games in the league and scored 10 goals
He has only played the full 90 for six games and been unused on the bench for 3 games
Simms has been given less than 20 minutes a game on 13 occasions and in total he has played 1068 minutes out of 2790 minutes scoring ten league goals.

quit frankly its clear that Lampard doesnt fancy Simms despite Wrights lack lustre displays and poor return.
what do people expect from a striker thats only be given bit opportunities in the team usually the last ten minutes and yet when he was given a chance because Lampard had no choice with injuries he has scored to only be dropped again when Wright has returned.
if I was simms Id be looking to get out as soon as he can because he must know now that Lampard doesnt rate him. Lampard did the same when he was at Everton. simms was banging in the goals on loan at Sunderland and then Lmpard recalled him but never played him

I don't normally say this, but if we get promoted, both Simms and Wright have to be sold, they're not good enough for the prem, the lack of goals from them both would see us in the bottom 3 by sept

If we are to go up I'd keep them both - I'd keep the whole team in fact (no contract extensions mind) It's inevitable we'd be coming straight back down - Not what a lot of people want to hear, granted.
The brief journey would yield millions, likewise with parachute payments.
Players contracts naturally worn down, brand new squad assembled and away we go again.

With £100+ million? Why is it inevitable? Sunderland have done remarkably well

I’m convinced neither of them are consistent enough to get us to the Prem. For strikers they are such a pair of shrinking violets.

Props to Sunderland for risking it - They gambled and it will pay (quite literally) off.
It's a once in a blue moon gamble though that delivers that reward.
You know exactly as I do the predictability in 2 or sometimes all 3 of the promoted sides being relegated straight back down - And invariably being left lumbered with an almighty wage bill in a division that doesn't offer the same financial wonderland.
Anyway, why are you assuming Doug would sanction 100+ mil?

If I was manager I would be reluctant to start Simms too, if you're being totally honest as a fan you have to admit its astounding that Simms has managed to score as many as he has because he is just not very good, he blunders his way through most games and as I have said before even he looks mystified thats he's actually scored himself

I think if we had any chance of automatic promotion we needed to be on 65-68 points by now. Now we need around 28-30, just can't see us getting anywhere that. Play offs is the best we are going to get

As crazy as it sounds - We could win promotion via the play offs without scoring a solitary goal in 330 mins of football.
Problem is, can we remember what to do with a penalty?

If there's anything astounding about how many goals Simms has got it's more due to his mentality rather than ability.

Sure, he has deficiencies (his lack of ability to consistently trap a football always surprises me) but in terms of a goalscorer I think he is decent enough. If he wasn't so nice and used his size to his advantage, rather than feel apologetic for it, he would score a huge number of goals.
