The stats are pleasing but not surprising. Sheaf and Eccles both have very clever technique in winning the ball. It's a definite skill. With Hamer it's more that he's a human dynamo.

Edit: actually if anything I'm surprised the numbers aren't higher. Eccles in particular seems very adept at gaining possession, which I think is overlooked in terms of contribution to the team.

This...whilst Sheaf rightly gets plaudits (these days !), Eccles does do a lot of work which often goes unnoticed by many, which is (i presume) why MR gave him a new contract.

Makes me think what will MR do to improve our midfield and I’m sure he will at least try pace, a goalscorer ? add a fit again O’Hare and a fully fit Palmer it’s a nice embarrassment of riches.

Agree, Eccles has significantly improved and if he can learn to release the ball quicker when he wins it or has it at his feet and importantly pick the right passes, he will be an even bigger asset for the club.

If he does aquire those well noticed attributes from you that would make him a premiership player one way or another

Let’s say that after getting possession, the team keeps the ball for 2 minutes. If the three players mentioned in the stats win 3 tackles per game each, that could be 18 minutes of possession gained or 20% of the match. A simplistic way of looking at it I know, but that potentially turns a 40-60 game into a 60-40 one.

I bet it’s the kind of thing managers love. It doesn’t have to be aggression or crunching tackles – Sheaf for example is great at sticking out a long leg to nick the ball.

btw on the site I've just looked at, 14th on the list is Kasey Palmer. That should get a few people frothing at the mouth about how stats mean nothing

Tha is something Robns must've worked on. Many a time we waited for teams to give the ball away instead of us actively winning it back. Mcnallys 2 tackles against Sunderland for our goal as an example

The missing ingredient from our midfield is goals, regular goals that is. Hamer and O’Hare should weigh in with a few more, double figures from both imo. Then more from Palmer they all have it in their locker.

If we were able to keep the ball for 2 minutes our entire midfield wouldn't be in the top 20 tacklers in the division

Hamer has got 6, Allen has got 7 - you could see both adding to that tally by the season's end. They have contributed this season. Need more from O'Hare when fit and Palmer but it's better than it was.

Hamer as an attacking force has been great this season (though I guess his corner taking would inflate the figure):

No-one was saying he shouldn't get a new deal. It was questioning whether four years for a player who has been injured a lot during his time at the club, even in the academy, was sensible. That was, and arguably still is, a valid doubt.

Agree, I have.noticed we seem a bit more positive now in midfield and go forward more especially Sheaf hopefully more goals will follow.

Eccles' defensive stats are superb.

This is compared with other midfielders in the division.

Absolute disgrace we tied a talented young player down to a long term deal!

Hope you’re right.

Is this the longest run of starts he’s put together for us in his career? He’s started the last 8 I believe.

I want him to make 30+ starts next season before I’d be confident about his injury record.

He’s a fantastic player

Yes I think it is his longest run of starts. Also I don't think we've lost a game he's started in midfield.

He's been available for 30 of 38 games so far.

And yes I think he's a great talent.

Did we just agree on something?

Just seen a post on newsnow come up about our January interest in Jamie Paterson and I do feel if we have had him we could have got some more goals and assists through that AM role seeming as we’ve missed Jamie Allen and Kasey Palmer since January and Sean Maguire was a pointless signing.

Has Paterson been fit ? not sure he has, but I agree a fit Paterson might have been an asset

We need better than Jamie Paterson

with o hare back at the end of year I’d probs be looking at an exciting prem loan in that position, focus on permanent signings elsewhere

Maguire has played more football since January than Paterson. Neither have offered anything - spending £500,000 on Paterson would have been an almighty waste.

I think we have been lucky with our midfield despite some inconvenient injuries involving Sheaf, Allen and Palmer we have coped and we have the emerging talent of Josh Eccles and slight switch involving Hamer we’ve done okay.

From reading this article it appears that he’s just been froze out and not in the plans but then they complain he’s not match fit now (no shit Sherlock)

I think they were just being greedy demanding £400k for him when they wanted him off the books and now it’s cost them dearly. Had they of given him to us for free like they did with Bidwell I think he could have added a real option and a few goals from deeper in play

If Hamer leaves we’ll need a new one
