Huckerby was rapid, acceleration was his biggest strength. I remember that time he knocked the ball past Gareth Barry I think with a 5 yard start and beat him to it.

He could run very quickly in a straight line, but that was about it.

Jose Perdomo was very slow.

Darren Currie was probably the slowest winger I've ever seen.

I reckon Milan is quicker over 20 to 50 yards than any of the other players mentioned. I dare say he'd lose to Williams over 100 though.

As said before Cain was genuinely sprinter quick, shame he was so bad at all other aspects of football.

Depends over what distance… I think out of current squad MVE would win 30M but I’d back Haji at 100M.

Cain was very fast and probably quicker than Williams. He certainly was amongst the top rank of junior sprinters in the country until he was required to stop to focus on football. Another contemporary of his who never made it with us was a lad called Rob Ogleby who was also a top junior sprinter before having to quit to concentrate on football.

Willo could eat up half a pitch in the blink of an eye. Kevin Gallacher was absolutely electric over 15 yards. Huckerby’s edge was that he had the upper-body strength to shrug off defenders while building up significant speed. And he was lightening off the mark too.

More recently, Ryan Kent, Wilson and MVE stand out for me. Slowest players are Steve Staunton and Kenny Sansom who in fairness, were both nearing the end of the road.

Micky Gynn was rapid. As was Cyril Regis. Haji Wright is deceptively quick.

It also depends on whether it is a foot race or running with the ball. EMC in a foot race over Saka. Put a ball at their feet and EMC is reduced to walking football.

On the speed front I reckon George Curtis was definitely on the slow side. A very good player though and still one of my favourites.

Used to be at the same running club in my youth with Ash Cain, he was in the fastest 2-3 people in the whole of England for his age group. Only ever watched him lose a 100m race once. His body was an absolute machine, it was amazing to watch. His stride mechanics was something I’ll never forget. Bloke was built like a brick shithouse at 14 man. I’d struggle to believe many would be faster than him, he trained for it.

Was a long time back now but even then he was running something like 11.6 secs at 14. Ran with him till he was 16/17 where it might have got down to like 11.2 but then from that point it was football only as he was breaking through to first team. Had he of scored that sitter he missed on his debut vs Barnsley I think things could have been very different for him. He always had such an aura, no shock he became a bit of a celeb but he is pretty incredible at whatever he does
