if all fit and not suspended

Marosi

Dabo
Mason
McFazdean
Hyam

(Rose as competent back up)

Kelly
Allen
O Hare

Godden

then 2 from
Shipley
Jobello
Kastaneer
Hiwula
Bakayoko

not looking a bad squad if we can get all fit with a strong bench

Shipley and Bakayoko aren't in contention for the wide berths surely? It's 2 from Jobello, Kastaneer and Hiwula, with the possiblity of Jones post-Christmas.

No place for Jones?

I’d go:

Marosi
Dabo Rose McFadz Mason
Allen Kelly O’Hare
Jobello Godden Hiwula

S: Wilson, Pask, Hyam, Shipley, Kastaneer, Jones, Bakayoko

Hiwula over Kastaneer because his goal scoring record is great and he works for the team well. Also Kastaneer is clearly a super sub

Hyam is probably not going to be first choice this season.

Hiwula has a goal in him, but he goes missing far too often during games.
Ideally I'd bring in another striker for him, but I doubt we have the funds.

Thats my criticism of Hiwula theres no doubting he aint bad at finishing but he goes missing too often for my liking, his work rate is poor at times having said that he is currently our top scorer

I think Hiwula supports Mason far better than Jobello does Dabo personally.

Which is a shame because I fear he will then want to leave. There is no reason he shouldn't be playing after being player of the season last year in my opinion. He had a knock in preseason otherwise I think he would have started ahead of Rose.

All depends on injuries. Next game someone could be out for months and he's back in the team as a regular. But he could end up like Davies if that doesn't happen.

With McFadz's age I think to lose Hyam would be a loss long-term, even though MR seems to very highly rate Williams.

People keep saying this but I think Rose is the better player judging by pre season and the games so far.

Nothing against Hyam though.

Weren’t we saying last year Hyam was one for the future and how he’d done well to be a starter. Hardly think he’s going to get pissed off he’s not first choice now. Long season he’ll get his chance.

Shippers, Zain and Hyam and young Sam McCallum will be close to that first team too. All will all be needed to add in to that original list and there will almost always be someone who is injured, suspended, loss of form or something else. I agree it might be Utopia, but we can never really assume all will be fit, firing and to take into account sometimes the best 11 players don't make the best team.

But it must be hard to go from being a regular starter to a bit part. Having worked his way into the team he'll probably be a bit narked he's not in now. But like you I think he'll get his chance.

Wouldn't really call being on the bench for a league one side week in, week out a bit part, especially at his age. He's an established member of the first team and Fadz/Rose won't play every game. I think he'll be pretty realistic about his chances and i have faith that MR can manage the squad well enough.

What’s with this ‘young Sam McCallum’ business? Oggy uses it on the radio like it’s his actual name, it never seems to be ‘young Will Bapaga’ or ‘young Josh Eccles’. Not having a go just one of them irritating things I’ve picked up on.

Yeah Hyam will definitely get an opportunity, there is bound to be an injury. As people say it is a long season.
It is great we have 3 centre backs who are first 11 quality. Just can't help but feel for him a little as him and Kelly would have been first 2 as on the team sheet.

Shows we have upgraded significantly on Davies and replaced Willis well too so certainly stronger at the back than last season.

Marosi

Dabo Rose McFadzean Mason

Allen Kelly O’Hare

Jobello Godden Kasteener

Wilson
Hyam
Pask
Shipley
Hiwula
Biamou
Jones

The starting 11 is harsh on Hiwula most of all (especially as I’ve always been a big advocate), but despite the fact he plays it well, I don’t think he’s a natural wide player. Plus Kasteener is supposed to be another level, so if true he has to start. I did debate dropping Jobello, but he has pace and (when confident) direct running ability, which is an asset at any level, especially L1.

I’m not a Bakayoko hater, but I’ve chosen Biamou over him as Biamou can play the link/target man role if we needed to change things tactics or formation wise. Whereas I’m still not sure what type of striker Bakayoko is.

It’s also harsh on Westbrooke but he isn’t a game changer from the bench, and while Shipley isn’t either he gets the place due to industry and experience.

Hyam is the other who can feel hard done by and for me Rose and him are interchangeable, but Rose currently holds the shirt.

Hiwula isn't playing as a wide player. Why is everybody so obsessed with traditional roles. Look at the runs Hiwula makes.

Good point Fernando. Our first goal at Portsmouth was created by a left channel run from Godden (fantastic player and movement) and a cross into Hiwula in the centre forward position. With Jobello racing up to support. That's real fluidity in a front 3. Also last year we had the glory days of Bright and Hiwula combining and defenders left chasing shadows - Sunderland a best case example.

Despite this I still see Hiwula as an enigma as he frequently goes missing at key times - so not entirely sure he would start every game for me. You could make various arguments for a front 3 of Kast - Godden - Jobello or when fully fit Jones - Godden - Kast. Good to have options and Hiwula is a class player - just would like to see him influencing games more over 90 minutes. I've always thought as well that he's a confidence type player.

It’s a turn of phrase. I’m well aware he isn’t playing as a ‘winger’.

Change wide man to inside forward if you like - my point remains. He makes fantastic runs (from a wide position) to get behind defenders - he’s probably our best player for making those intelligent runs (look back to games last season when he was hated on here - I called it then), but he’s still expected to perform defensive duties. While he does those very admirably, he’s a striker so it isn’t his natural game. Whereas Jobello and Kasteener have always played as midfielders (even if as attacking wingers) so the defensive elements should already be ingrained. That’s what’s I meant by he isn’t a natural wide man (inside forward). I also appreciate Jobello did the exact opposite on Tuesday. However while Hiwula is a natural finisher and makes clever runs, if Jobello and Kasteener are direct runners that will scare defences more. Especially as Hiwula isn’t always picked out. Tight call either way.

Even now, I’m not sure I’d play Jobello ahead of Hiwula.

Hiwula is one of the first names on the team sheet for me. He can be anonymous and have some shocking games but his goal threat is too big to take out the team. I really didn’t like him at first but you can’t afford to lose a wide man who will score over 10 goals.

And he was our top scorer last season. Far too often teams leave their leading goal scorer on the bench because he doesn't track back or goes missing or whatever. We shouldn't make that mistake. The object of the game is to score goals so, for the moment, he has to start.
