Great day that was. I was about 10 and couldn't believe it

A more negative one I remember was the season before and getting hammered by Forest 3-0. I think that was a Campbell hatrick that day too

I think Forest went on to get relegated that season.

I remember the first day of the season opener of our first season in the championship. Stockport away, loads of City fans there and a 2-0 win. We thought we were going to romp the league. Oh dear !!

Remember that day too. High expectation on way to Stockport...small ground, bright sun, sky blue everywhere. All looked so easy...one season out of the premiership and we would return. Oh dear indeed....all downhill from there

I've been to the last two opening days and we've lost 3-2 in the last minute pretty much both times. Heartbreaking to be honest. Big good games mind you.

Last year everyone chanting reda as he scored at half time.

3-1 it was but yeah, Hendry was embarrassing. His signing post Charlton cup game is when Strachan should have been sacked Imo.

I remember the 3-2 win over Chelsea, pulsating match and that was the first year that I had a season ticket. I also remember that day being when Damon Hill qualified third on the grid in an Arrows for the Hungarian Grand Prix, but I digress...

For me, I always remember the excitement counting down to the new season when the CT printed a preview paper detailing all the team and squad members.

You're right. I was only a young lad then... Just remember getting so up for it and then that. Strachan's sacking was long overdue when you look back at these performances

Has to be beating a decent Everton side 4-1 at Goodison, we all thought could this be the start of good things, it wasn't.

Mmm, opening day memories:

Quinn hatrick at Highbury, Chelsea 3-2 and then 2-1 the following season, 2-1 Man Utd (Ron Atkinson's first game after replacing Dave Sexton - it was his first game in charge of us), 3-2 at Watford (Gould's first game?)
then, 1-3 Boro, 0-3 Forest, 0-1 Man City

Blimey's thats going back a bit. Was that the John O Rourke hat-trick? Think that was the first time we had the Green and Black striped away kit. It was the start of good things in a way though wasn't it, because we qualified for Europe that season.

Think it was David Cross.

I think it was the season where he also scored a hat trick in the last match, away at Burnley.

It was David Cross, Alan Green got the other, and yes Cross did score a hat-trick on the final day too, wonder if that has ever been done before or since. Can't remember the year but Cross was a Gordon Milne signing so it wasn't the year we qualified for Europe, Noel Cantwell was manager then.

Barnsley away in 2007. Won 4-1 and I got stuck in Barnsley because I couldn't find the coach I was that drunk.

Our last season in the Prem, losing 3-1 at home to Middlesborough with David Thompson being sent off. Writing was on the wall right from the off.

Manchester United was not Ron Atkinson's first game, his first game for us was West Ham at home which we won 2-0 I think Mike Marsh got both the goals. Also Big Ron didn't replace Sexton that was Bobby Gould, his first stint.

I wasn't clear: 81/82 season (first year of al seater). It was his first in charge at Man Utd, and had replaced the sacked Dave Sexton there - It was Sexton's first game in charge of us.

I remember that one for all the wrong reasons  I was arrested by a rookie, very over zealous copper soon after Chelsea took the lead. I was in Sky Blue stand that day and offered some advice to a small group of Chelsea fans close by as to where they should really be sitting. Cue the 'hedgehog' - A very flappable steward some may recall, who informed said young rozzer. They remained and I was arrested!
After local and nationwide media coverage of this heinous miscarriage of justice, I was released without charge, just in time to meet the Chelsea escort making it's way up Far Gosford Street as I walked down it to meet up with my pals at the Beer Engine.
Altho I had found out the score I still cheekily enquired of them every 20 yards or so.
Another opening day 'memory' was against Everton, late 1980's. We won but consternation ensued as we arrived to find out Spion Kop admission had increased from the previous season by £1 to - £7.50! Some of the 'tutting' reached fever pitch, I think one bloke dislocated his tongue. Little did we know what we would soon be paying to watch our heroes.

There was nationwide media coverage between you getting arrested and the end of the game??

I love the recalling of old games and the history surrounding them, facts get mixed sometimes but that's what makes football fans. The opening day of any season is a highlight of the year really. I think i am correct in that we went a good few years not losing an opening day fixture with some big wins at Arsenal, Everton, Spurs. Lost at fucking Villa though !!

Another hat trick. This time from David Cross. I think he also got a hat trick on the last day of that season away at Burnley.

How many opening day hat-tricks have we had ?David Cross, Mickey Quinn, anymore ? Think Terry Bly might have got one but it was our first home match of the season not the opening one.

Must have been something about that day, as that was probably the most pissed I've ever been in my life!!!

Loads of us went up on one of the coaches that got you to a boozer just outside Barnsley a good few hours before the game, got bang on it which continued in the ground and then we left early and walked what seemed like miles up and down hills to a Tescos where we bought a litre bottle of voddy and some plastic cups! Smashed the litre on the way back to Cov and got dropped at the Lion, few in there and then down the Lady where my memory goes seriously hazy!!

Remember walking up my garden path, falling over and being like a turtle on its back not being able to get up. Remember politely declining (ahem) my neighbours help and managing to drag myself upright in my porch where I fell asleep still standing up.

Was found a couple of hours later still sleeping and slightly soiled.

Not my finest moment.
