Are there any teams with the suffix City that do not play within the city boundaries?

Edit: or other administrative area (eg county, is town a defined thing?)

Cheers. (No like on mobile)

Edit: not to be picky but that's a ground share. I was hoping for a club that built its own stadium or has always been outside.

Troro City are set to move (eventually!!) outside:

I'm assuming you don't want to count Kettering at Rushden... I'll have a think about others, it's a decent question!

Dumb question, better to ask if a club in the last 25years has relocated outside the area from which it took its name.. and non-league clubs are not really relevant.

Well there is the faux Wimbledon to start with, are there any others?

That's a random one. Like I said, is town a defined thing like a City?

Also, random Wikipedia fact now: Grimsby and Hull are the only teams allowed to play league football on Christmas Day due to the demands of the fish trade.

Such a charmer. Well NW liked it so there!

No because I'm looking for precident that the club can be named City if it's out of the City.

Why are non-league clubs irrelevant?

Just ones non-league now or teams that have always been non-league? Or any team that's ever been non-league?

Bolton Wanderers you mean?

Surely the one suffix where it's rather apt to not be in your home?

Edit: This post is now defunct but stays for the pithy line.

It's a vaguely interesting thing to play with, having to come up with teams with relevant suffixes is why!

Yeah why is that? Is Grimsby that bad or would Cleethorpes cost too much in shirt lettering?

OK, what about teams that play outside of the jurisdiction of the council they share a name with?

Slightly worried what was originally a thread designed to find some case against City moving out has in fact ignighted the spark of football club origin geekery in me and in 20 years time I will become Lionel Bird or Jim Brown.

Just checked this out. Horwich has an Urban district council. It seems to have postcode B6 which is what Reebok has.
It is 5miles as the crow flies from Bolton centre to Horwich centre, the stadium is 4.3 miles from Bolton centre.
For reference the Ricoh is 3 miles from Coventry City centre.

In fact Barnet are an interesting case study.

Barnet Copthall given to Saracens rather than Barnet, they end up at the Hive, which was supposed to be earmarked for Wealdstone, who have been homeless for years!

So, and go with me here, what's to stop teams renaming themselves to a different town entirely?

If we became New York City for the international benefits, could anyone stop us?

Are there any limitations on names at all?

Bristol Rovers did play in Bath for 10 seasons due to financial problems.

Saw them play Bristol City there in a Simod Cup game or something in about 1988/89.

Gerry Francis was manager and Nigel Martyn in goal!

Got one!!

There is a second division football team who in all probability will be in the top flight by 2015.

They have a suffix of 'city' and are relocating, temporarily, approximately 20 miles south east of their current stadium, which is being renovated at an approximate cost of £125 million.

There current manager used to manage Coventry City
