I came across this snippet. Don’t know how I ended up down this rabbit hole.
Anyway, the thread makes reference to the sad death of a fan.

Norwich City fan went to Burnley vs CCFC as a neutral.

They called it the Long Side, big ground in its day Turf Moor. I think the record gate was at the time higher than the then population of Burnley.

I was there it was about 77 or 78 maybe a bit before , last game of the season.

I hitchhiked with a buddy to Burnley in about ‘74. We arrived 10 minutes late but the k. o. Was late because both keeper’s shirts clashed with the opposition. They both ended up wearing white.

That was a big old side terrace at Burnley. St Andrews was another side end.

The Kop at Blues was massive, was on there once when all conquering Leeds were their gate was well over 50k.
The Kippax at Main Road was also huge, 84000 was their record gate most in the Kippax.

But it’s a record gate Man City fans hate to talk about, as it was actually for a Man Utd game.
Utd we’re using Main Rd on account of Old Trafford being out of action due to bomb damage.

I remember when fans used to change ends at half time to be behind the goal their team were attacking. I don't condone or do violence. I came across it first at a pre season friendly in around 1967 at Forest Green who were non-league. That
same year when changing ends Blackburn fans started throwing eggs at us, then attacked us with chains. Most of them looked like greasers. The violence in the 70s led to a major loss of football fans across the board. Check the statistics. To all the nob heads who think going to a match for a fight is glamorous, look how much revenue your club is losing.

That day at Blackburn was meyhem it was Easter Saturday Blackburn fans tried it on but about 2.30 thousands of Cov came in all round the ground off the trains lots of older ones first proper football fighting I seen Blackburn lot didn’t know what hit them our lot battered them we won 1-0 to put us well into the driving seat for promotion.

I follow my local side Elche in Spain and found it very strange to start with to discover that away supporters can freely buy tickets in home areas and although the support is quite passionate, I’ve never seen a punch thrown. It’s quite refreshing and reinforces my belief that certain fans are a lot braver when behind barriers than when sitting next to opposing fans.

One of the very noticeable things when I lived out there was the lack of any sort of away fan culture. It's the thing I like most about the English game. We have teams in the 5th tier taking thousands away, but when I watched Mallorca you'd sometimes see only 10-15 away fans, even Barca it would only be 200 or so.

Went to Malaga v Villarreal and I don't think there were any away fans. It was like a pre season friendly.

Big distances though between the teams
about 500 km Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia v Barca at about 250 mile might be considered local Sevillia/Barca nearly a 1000
Our longest trip this year is Sunderland at 200 mile.
Be interesting to know how many Real or Barca fans go to what is their grudge away trip and if there’s any agro.

Mind you I’ve just checked and high speed train Madrid to Barcelona takes 2 hours and if I’ve read it right costs just 4.5 euros, if that price is correct I think we would fill a few trains.
Just checked that price again and it says £12/16 euros for a 1.5 hour trip, still miles cheaper than here.

Thought it was '75. I was at that and we all went to Blackpool after the game. Crazy evening there too CCFC v locals !?!

A Burnley fan was firing a water pistol at the City fans through the railings (god knows what the liquid was!)

I think last year RM took 800 to Barcelona.

Distance is an issue of course, but Germany has an away day culture with big followings and some big distances. I think it's more cultural. They just don't travel in Spain. Playing games Sunday evening doesn't help.

The other issue there is economic. Nearly 60% of young adults are unemployed. It's a huge issue.

This is true. I was saying the other day I regularly watch Mallorca and I've never seen more than about twenty away fans. Usually it is zero. Obviously being an island makes some difference, but Mallorca themselves actually travel away quite well in comparison to a lot of other teams. There is a club that charter planes and make a weekend of it. I got invited (but not going) to Real Betis away. 135 euros for return flight and match ticket. You'd pay more to train it to some games in the UK.

You are correct I looked the other week for a return train ticket to Euston and was quoted £147 absolute joke, can get one for about half that but where does £147 come from got the same job. Country is a joke.

It will be even easier I imagine when they are relegated to the Smartbank. Capacity is about 35000 so plenty of seats. You can buy online two days before kick off ( ticket is electronic to your phone )or at the ticket offices on the day.

We always get healthy away followings at Elche. Many of course are students at the local universities but quite a lot make the journey and make a weekend of it by the sea and usually in the sunshine.

I used to have an apartment just outside Torrevieja in Punta Prima, never took in a game but City usually go near there pre-season don’t they? San Pedro del Pinatar I think.

Sunday evenings is a real barrier - I went to Levante at home to Seville a few years ago and the game finished just before 2300 local time. Not the best time to be getting back to Seville from Valencia. I bought tickets at the gate for 20 Euros sitting behind the goal - great night out with the children and so different from games in England; a noticeable family atmosphere
