Rooney, 23, had stopped at a garage around a mile before - and accidentally put unleaded petrol in the turbo-diesel tank.
The Overfinch 4x4, which he bought for Coleen last Christmas, then conked out between Junctions 9 and 10 at Warrington.
The pair, who married in Italy in June, were thought to be on their way home from visiting family in Liverpool on Monday when the vehicle shuddered to a halt.
They pulled into the hard shoulder before waiting for the Range Rover to be towed away.
The new Mrs Rooney, 22, was smiling and chatting when she went into the petrol station to pay for the fuel, according to staff there.
But she was said to be less than pleased when her husband realised his mistake.
And it could be an expensive one, costing up to £6,000 in repair bills for flushing the engine.
However, the Rooneys won't exactly be without wheels while they wait for the Overfinch to be fixed.
They have a number of luxury cars worth a total of more than £1m including a Lamborghini Gallardo, Bentley Continental GT, BMW M6 and Aston Martin Vanquish.
