Isn’t the ball getting stuck in water on the pitch one of the ways they test the conditions? The quarter of the pitch near the scoreboard wasn’t really playable I don’t think. That said, I’d have been disappointed if the game had been postponed so late. Regardless of the conditions, we played the better football last night so can hold our heads high and feel confident about next Friday. Much as I like Max, I think I would play JCH. He’ll run at them, which they didn’t like last night and got us the penalty.

Pitch was a disgrace last night. We should’ve played it better, but what the fuck happened to it? It never rained enough to mess it up that badly.

Watered before the game based on a no rain predicted forecast.

The usual suspects criticising Max, I don’t think any of them noticed how many great defensive headers he won defending corners/set pieces. He did a job there....and there was also one last ditch tackle toe poke away in penalty area when their player was clear through.

Play him as a defender then

Plus it seems obvious that wasps have skimped on the pitch when they had it relaid in the summer.

If Forte is injured on Friday then we're probably favourites.

Why? Apart from the goal last night he offered fuck all! He spent more time rolling around than standing on his feet! He was a poor man's JCH last night! His biggest mistake was at 1-0 on a promising attack, could of gone for goal and put us to bed, instead chose to waste time and run around in circles in the corner! Game could of been killed at 2-0 and left us too much to do at their place!

Yep, and he was left completely unmarked in the six yard box, you'd be disappointed if your granny missed that

Exactly! I don't see what all the fuss is about! I thought the only decent footballer in their team last night was the left back! Which is a bit of a contradiction as I thought all our good work going forward went down his side through Grimmer and Bayliss!

Eh? He had to back heal the ball in - it was great technique.

It was unmarked in the six yard box, regardless of technique it was one of the simplest goals he'll score AND the only thing he did all night! I don't get the hype!

look at it very closely....I think he may have been off side after all when the ball was played. Academic now.
Still think if we play our tight defense we will get chances and 1 or 2 will go in.

The ball was 100%played forward, look at frame 1 (when the ball was passed) Forte is on the edge of the 6 yard box. Then in frame 2 (the shot/goal) he was only 2/3 yards off the goal line, so was 3/4 yards behind the path of the ball! The only question is was he inline with, behind or in front of the pass? From that angle it's hard to tell for sure! I am 100% certain though, the ball was not passed backwards!

The interesting thing is the player marking him ended up further away from the goal that when he started.
This is a clear illustration that the ball can always move much more quickly than a player, no matter how much 'pace' he has.

Not wishing to start one off here and don't know what Oggy's coaching manual States, but is that close enough for Burge to attempt to claim .
Secondly for clarity are we now saying it definitely was off ?

That's what I said last night, not blaming him but I felt he should have been at Forte's feet when the ball arrived.

If the left back cuts the ball back and his own player is ahead of our defender wouldn't he still be offside?

That’s taking away what was a fantastic bit of skill.

What if Forte kept his back towards goal, Burge comes out to claim the ball and fouls him, giving away a penalty... he becomes the villa again. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and that’s why our ‘job’ as fans is so easy.

It’s Grimmer’s fault all day for the goal. He should’ve slid into that, he didn’t really know whether he was clearing it or going for a tackle and got beat by his man. Overall, I like Grimmer, but he makes too many mistakes that lead to goals. Of the top of my head, he’s responsible for a several goals against; Yeovil, Blackburn, Notts County, Lincoln just off the top of my head...

I've said in the match thread that grimmer should have cleaned everything out into the advertising hoardings. Not blaming Burge at all i just think he could have spread himself at Forte's feet. I probably wouldn't have made a difference, I'm sure it's something he will have considered himself watching it back.

It's the a bit like Sunderland fans always blaming Coventry. Some Coventry fans always blame Burge, even when it is clearly not his fault he gets criticised with "he should have done better."

Are people blaming burge or just over analysing the goal?
In the spirit of over analysis, my question is where was the marking for their goal? The defender (was it Davis?) just left him completely unmarked.

Goal nothing to do with burge

That goal line clearence shouldnt be praiaed too much tho as he caused the issue by not coming to claim it

Exactly, appalling marking from a defence that had been pretty faultless. There is a player stood behind the goalscorer just watching, he should have closed down the threat before the ball came in.
