…don’t worry, he hasn’t died! Just trying to add some levity to a depressing Saturday.

Been watching some old DVDs from the 90s (I know, I know). But have we had a more technically gifted player since? Don’t think I appreciated his quality at the time.

He was. Possibly the most naturally gifted player I've seen play for us.

Not to say the most effective, but the most technically proficient.

I think joining the Villa has cast a shadow on Hadji for me. Plus he did go missing a few times during the two seasons he was with us.
Keane was absurdly talented too, but the one season he was with us we didn’t win away.

Whelan was a bit of flawed genius, which I’m always drawn to.

The Huckerby run and goal against Man U was pretty special. Loved the way he played

Whelan was my favourite player of that era , I've always loved watching mavericks .
I don't think he scored to many ordinary goals and scored one of the best goals I've ever seen live .Think it was Middlesbrough at home on a frozen pitch , players playing in astro turf trainers, and he picked it up on the halfway line and beat 5-6 players before scoring .
If he had lead a better off field life he would've played for England

This has been the most unfortunate window since his coming together with Bobby’s in Leamington

Was a fantastic player, I loved him growing up. His volley at Selhurst Park was sublime.

Also, I have some stories about Noel Whelan, great as a youngish lad way back when, but looking back now, shocking when you think he was a professional footballer

As a striker in his first season... he was probably key in keeping us up.

Then dropped deeper to the wings when Hucks was paired with Dion.

Always had time for him... very skilled player & I remember being at Selhurst Park for that wonder goal when we pulled it back against the Dons.

Loved Noel very gifted but in terms of technical proficiency I would put Roland Nillson at the top of my list of players I've been privileged to watch in Sky Blue.

Agree... his control and posture on the ball was incredible, never panicked just did his job and always found the right pass

Helped by a block by Whelan on a Man Utd defender giving Huckerby the space to run into.
I was at Southend in the LC when Whelan controlled a clearance by Oggy and volleyed an inch perfect pass to maybe Huckerby on the right wing.

The goal he scored away to Southampton in 1998 was world class - one touch football ripped Southampton between Dion and Huckerby and Whelan curled it into the top corner first time from about 25 yards. SBA 'It's just like watching Brazil.' Sensational first half performance that night; Le Tissier scored against us of course

Did we win 2-1 with the other a brilliant move & finish by Huckerby?

The goal v Man Utd - Noel blocked off Nicky Butt as Huckerby was cutting past the last defender

He really should have gone to the very top but obviously was held back by his off field issues.
