UNIVERSITY Hospital in Coventry is cancelling operations and appointments this week as it struggles to cope with high demand. Hospital bosses said they had see large numbers of patients who had complex conditions and a lengthy hospital stay before they were fit to go home. Doctors and nurses have been working "round the clock" to free up beds and discharge patients safely, but the hospital has now had to take more drastic steps. The measures are expected to last for 72 hours and anyone with an appointment or operation within that time is advice to contact the hospital using the details on their patient letter. Chief operating officer David Eltringham said: “Winter is always a challenging time for the health service and we are well prepared for these peaks in demand. Our contingency plans are in place to make sure that we can deal with situations just like this one.” He also urged people to think whether they could be better treated at a GP surgery, walk-in centre or pharmacy before heading to A&E.
