Be about right. As soon as we get in the Championship and get sponsored by a betting company rather than a local firm it gets banned!

I’d assume if this was the case, then existing sponsors could continue until the contract ends.

Without these sponsors half of those clubs would of gone under I’d imagine so unless the government is willing to cover the loss of income I can’t see this happening

So not only does the government not give any support to clubs during the pandemic they are also going to remove a key income stream for half the clubs in the league.

I think there'll be a 'winding down' period if it does happen. I'd be surprised if they implemented such a rule and would enforce it from next season.

As mentioned above, there'll be contracts that run past that.

I think it will happen eventually, but doing it now with everything going on would be the wrong time.

Surely the govt have more pressing matters they need to attend to and with no fans clubs are desperate for the income.

Cant believe everyone saying ooh ok but not now.

Now is exactly the time they should do it. With more people out of work than ever or having a real tough time, the last thing that should be encouraged is chasing the dream for the potential easy win which rarely happens. Whilst an advert might not tempt you, it puts it at the forefront of your mind if youalready have issues. I'm not speaking without experience either as a borderline addict who probably spends more on gambling than I should.

I get that, it is hard as someone who hasn't struggled with gambling to comprehend the damage it causes.

That said it has to be done without pulling the rug from under clubs who are already struggling to meet bills. It was stated that the money offered by betting firms when we went up far outstriped non betting firms. I can see it being wound down rather than flat out banned. Going to have to rename the whole league after all.

Gambling has really changed in my lifetime. There are so many things you can bet on now and it is pushed in your face, even though I dont bet. Some people have had their lives destroyed by a gambling addiction, but it normally affects more than one life.

Sponsorship is hard to come by and our club needs sponsorship. But I am not a fan of being sponsores by a gambling company.

I know this subject will draw a host of opinions. I am not against gambling if it is done responsibly. But there is evidence these companies take advantage of people with gambling problems.

Does seem a bit of a virtue signalling going on here, although I'm not a fan of it myself.
Wonder if it got a bit acrymonious during government and the sports rep's when seeking assistance and this might be a shot across the bows to shush down.
Don't really see it actually happening or what the substitute sponsors will be.

This issue provides a real conundrum and doesn't really lend itself to a short comment on a message board. People that gamble and are addicted to it will gamble regardless of whether football teams have a betting company on their shirt, so I don't think this step will make the slightest impact on the issue as a whole.

However the football industry likes to put itself at the forefront of moral issues, and as such it is a bit hypocritical to have such a plethora of teams sponsored by the gambling industry. The move to ban such advertising down the line is therefore inevitable.

the Its the half time adds that should be banned - a name on a shirt dosn't have the same impact as Geoff telling you live odds on the game you are watching.100% commercial adds should be banned and have no doubt they will be soon

It’s crazy in this day and age that Ferrari and Ducati’s race top end race teams are still sponsored by a tobacco company. With regards to gambling this is a good thing long term and isn’t a great surprise. The Spanish have done the same.

I agree it's more about getting people to use you rather than a rival more than attracting new players. Hence why it used to be popular with drinks/tobacco.

However, if you're sponsored by a betting company etc then it could well entice someone who didn't gamble to at least try it and end up getting addicted in the long run.

Also the ban has an effect on the perception of it. Tobacco sponsorship was rife and seen to be socially acceptable. Banning advertising has played a small role in changing that perception. It seems alcohol is going that way too in younger age groups. So long term it could well lead to betting being seen as an unattractive pastime and reduce consumption and therefore the problems it causes.

I had the impression that this is a decision made within football and not a Government instruction (apologies if that's wrong). Although they often makes a balls up of dealing with social issues, football does like to be seen to be seen as influential in such matters, if you look at the likes of race and equality. This is just a logical extension of that. Horse Racing however is intrinsically linked to gambling, and without it the sport would cease to exist.

We managed for the rest of our club history not to be sponsored by a gambling company, I don’t understand why nobody else would be willing to do it if you banned the bookies. I lost thousands of pounds to it in my early 20s and it’s well known that these people make the vast bulk of their earnings from a small number of regular ‘customers’.

I’m not happy knowing that the club’s sponsorship money is coming from at least a few people who were in the same place I was. Even if it weren’t illegal I’d hope we look elsewhere for a sponsor
