Used to play for Shrewsbury, alongside Mark Tierney who went to Norwich. He's a full back and only 5'7". So not really a central defender. Pretty consistent. Seen him play a few times. Rarely scores. He's tenacious & hard tackling. Not a potential signing that will get the fans excited but he's experienced.

Benjamin Alexander (Ben) Herd (born 21 June 1985) is an English footballer who plays as a full back for League Two side Aldershot Town.
Starting his Football League career with Watford in 2003, he made his name at Shrewsbury Town between 2005 and 2009. In July 2009 he signed with Aldershot Town.

Watford Herd began his career as a trainee at Watford. He signed his first professional contract with the Championship club in March 2003, but was released two years later, having never played a game for the club.

Shrewsbury Town

In June 2005, Herd signed for League Two club Shrewsbury Town,[3] following a recommendation from Herd's former Watford manager Ray Lewington. He made his Shrewsbury début on 6 August in a 1–0 defeat at home to Rochdale. He was almost ever-present for Shrewsbury in his first season with the club.

In the 2006–07 season injuries restricted Herd to 31 league appearances. However he was a late inclusion in the Shrewsbury side for the League Two play-off final at Wembley, after Luke Jones picked up an injury in the warm-up. Shrewsbury went on to lose the game 3–1. He signed a fresh two year contract at the end of the season.[4]

In the 2007–08 season, Herd was again almost ever-present, missing just one league match through suspension.

The 2008–09 season started well for Herd, with the wing back in superb form, but a suspension meant that he was replaced by Darren Moss. Moss maintained a rich vein of form, resulting in Herd playing just five times after mid-November and getting released at the season's end. Herd was very disappointed that his contract would not be renewed, so he posted a goodbye and thank you message to the fans on the blue and amber forum.

Aldershot Town

After receiving interest from numerous clubs, Herd signed a two year contract with League Two side Aldershot Town in July 2009, to his great relief. He won Aldershot Town Player of the Season in 2010. The prestigious award was presented to him on the 1st May 2010 against Lincoln City. The following season Ben was voted Players' Player of the Season and received the award prior to Aldershot's home match against Rotherham.






According to this he is a full back rather than a centre half. We already have Christie and Clarke. Can't see why we would want another right back.

Sounds interesting, and like a rumour that could potentially be true (as much as I want to believe the Messi to Coventry rumours !) apologies if this is stated above but is he out of contract or would we have to pay for him ?

The Aldershot offal says he is an attacking right back too.

Well Christie is out til Christmas and experience is what we need. Didn't know who Keogh was when we signed him and that turned out ok!

Keogh out...And a league two Full Back In, so we still continue to downgrade our status and potential,
One thing you have to hand it to SISU for, They're consistant !!

Tankie, look at Mark Tierney, he's done ok at Norwich City. At one point him and Ben Herd were the full back pairing at Shrewsbury. Very solid. There was nothing between them in ability, saw them a few times. It doesn't have to be headline names to rebuild a team. Think about Grant Holt, he played for Shrewsbury and who would have thought he was an outside bet for England this year?
You'll recall that forward line we bought in way back in 1962. A right winger from Ards, inside forward from Linfield, centre forward from Peterborough, a Reading reject and a Brighton reserve (granted he was a flop!). Hardly the big time but it was the start we wanted. No?

This is the attitude I don't get. Where have the majority of our players come from in the last few decades? The lower leagues! The ones we go on about in our recent history are all from down there: Fox, Dann, Westwood, Keogh, etc etc

You're right Snoz,
But my Hatred for SiSU, and what they have done to our club has turned me into a raging Synic, they stood by and watched us go under in the most unconcerned manner, I'll never forgive them for that, probably I
should not Judge, incoming players, before they've kicked a ball, but I just can't believe, how low we've sunk, so bitterness has consumed me I'm afraid.

Yes you're right, we have uncovered some good players from lower leagues, but where are they now,
We can uncover them ...But Can't Keep them.
We are operating like a cut price corner shop.

Well yes, I can understand that in some ways, but isn't Jordan Willis a right back too? He certainly can play there and in view of just how small our squad is going to be, can we really afford to have 4 right backs at the club?

Say we can only bring 5 players in. don't you think we need strengthening elsewhere as a priority? We need at least 2 midfielders and 2 strikers and then we will need at least one centre half too.

Tankie, know what you mean and understand what they've done to us. Share that feeling too. I'd have to admit the chances of us getting in a player equivalent to Terry Bly now would be nil. He was top drawer at that level then.
Like a few posters, for the life of me I can't understand why for an investment of about half a million pounds we could transform that team. It is blindingly obvious. But it is all short term thinking by SISU.
Would imagine we need at least SIX experienced players to make a go of it. But reading the fresh ADMINISTRATION post elsewhere, it looks like this could all be academic.
The great pity of it all, and you've said we've sunk low, is that a well run City is easily better than Norwich, Stoke, Wigan, Fulham, Bolton, Blackburn, Queens Park, Soton and a few others.
Dreaming of the day SISU leave and a decent owner comes in.

But, again we've always done it. CCFC has always been a stop-off for players on the way somewhere else. We're no diffrerent now then we used to be. Maybe in the past the players were better, but we still couldn't keep them.

Some of our best players have been lower leaguers. I'm not going to be dismissive of our new stars of the future!

We are where we are.

Why can't we keep them do you think? Oh and before you go on some boring sisu rant this is a problem we and many clubs of our size always have.

The fact is we are and nearly always have been a loss making business on an annual basis. Therefore to balance the books we then sell assets and purchase lower value assets and the cycle starts again.

So if you had been in charge over the last decade what would you do?

Interesting you are also deriding the ability of a potential player before even seeing him. Replace Keogh with a lower league player? Where did Keogh come from, the premiership?

I think we need a left back too! Hussey still worries me defending, altho he may come good.

Well its a body at least,can't knock the guy without seeing him play ,though as the old saying goes ,"Where you buy them from is usually where you end up " ,as proven in our case.

Id say 2 left backs, i dont think Hussey is a left back think he is better going forward and maybe that's where he should play?? He also should take set pieces!

I'm going to be circumspect on this and am not with the HEARD,however Peter Frampton made a couple of decent records with them back in the 60's so if he comes we may be able to adapt a song dedicated to him.

When you said "circumspect" I thought you meant you were going to lop an inch off yer John Thomas!!

We need defenders too. Even though it's our strongest area it doesn't mean it's any good. We are an all round poor side and we will likely loose a few more players. This guy sounds on par with our defenders except Keogh and cranie. Hes good on FIFA that's about all I know.
