Coventry City midfielder Romain Vinecelot is happy to play the villain that opposition fans love to hate this season.

The 29-year-old comes with a reputation for being the bad guy as the Sky Blues found to their cost in numerous clashes with former club Leyton Orient over the last two years.

And the tough tackling Frenchman is keen to maintain that hard-man enforcer role at the Ricoh Arena where he hopes to upset as many rival supporters as possible.

“Opposition fans don’t seem to like me but I love it,” said Vincelot, breaking into a smile.

“I love it if the away fans get on me because it pushes me on more and more – and if I win another tackle I just look at the crowd.”

But the summer signing insists there’s more to his game than simply going round kicking and tackling people, including an impressive eye for goal.

“What I can bring and why I think the manager brought me to Coventry is to be able to organise and talk, and also be aggressive so that’s what I have come to do,” he said.

“What I like is getting the ball back and then giving it to a player who can create something. I can play, I can keep the ball and wait to give it to a player like John Fleck or a wide or attacking player so we can really create something, so I know how to pass the ball".

As for goals, for which he is particularly skilled at scoring with his head from open play, he added: “It depends where I am in the midfield, of course.

“When I was at Dagenham I scored 12 goals from midfield – ten headers in fact – and that was because the manager wanted me to get in the box every time the ball went wide.

“Last year I scored four, all headers. One was a set piece but the others came from me driving into the box. The year before when Leyton Orient were more successful my role was more sitting and being organised, getting the ball back and giving it to the forwards because they were on fire and scored a lot of goals between them, 50 or 60, and that’s why I hardly ever went in the box because there was no need to do it. I just stayed in the back seat organising the play.”

Vincelot jumped at the chance of joining City, impressed by the club’s stature and the players he’s played against in recent seasons.

“I know the squad very well from playing Coventry so many times in the last two years so I know there are some very good players,” he said. “And Sam Ricketts has signed and Reda Johnson has re-joined so I didn’t need to come here to see that it’s a good team.

“I played four times against Coventry two years ago and I know they are good, good players and that’s why I came. I liked the way everyone worked hard and in the right spirit.”

And at a time when manager Tony Mowbray is trying to draft in more forward thinking personnel, the midfielder is confident the club will get the the right players.

“Coventry will always attract good players because it is a big club and has a quality manager,” he insisted.

Really think this is going to turn out a very shrewd signing. Just the sort of player we have been screaming for for years.

How does everyone see the midfield lining up? IMO there's only 2 certainties at the moment the way TM has been bigging up Fleck and there's no one else who can play Vincelots role, don't think TM fancies JOB and can see him being replaced.

We have lacked one of these players for a while, think the last was probably Doyle.

As long as he doesn't miss too many games through suspension he will be a very good signing.

The lad is a class act at this level at the job he is in the team to do.

Looking forward to seeing him line up in a CCFC shirt (even if I don't remember what he was like against us )

Vincelot holding. O'Brien and Fleck doing the box to box role. Good balance on paper.

Fleck is not a holding midfielder. He's probably our fittest player, we need him as close to the opposition box as possible as he does have the ability to open defenders.

John Fleck our fittest player? I'd have him down as the unfittest.

He's not a box-to-box player either. He will be the deep lying play maker like Mowbray used Jonathan Greening setting the tempo. Maddison will be the one in the advanced area who will be unlocking defences. Vincelot has the ability to make late runs into the box and score goals, something we desperately needed last season, and in a side lacking goals we need now. Flecks goal record is poor, and I can't see Mowbray keeping vincelot sitting infront of the the back four.

He pisses all the fitness tests along with Conor Thomas, apparently. Just because he looks a bit chunky doesn't mean he isn't fit.

Today aside, id say hes done OK. Today, no one came out with any credit, perhaps with the exception of Armstrong. Difficult to judge or criticise him on his debut when the rest of the team fail to show, give him any service, meaning we don't really get to see what he can or cant do.

Back to Vincelot, he seems to want to get stuck in, tracks back well, but also always looking to play the ball forward. Anything like previous seasons and signings however im sure we will soon train this out of him.

Unlikely to get many goals, even if he does get in some good forward positions, but seems more likely to be an assistant for goals rather than putting them away himself.

Nearly snapped one of their players legs today, well he would have if he wasn't ten seconds too late

I dont think that we can have Fleck and Vincelot in the same team at home you cannot have two midfielders who offer little going forward and score a goal a season unless you have a prolific scorer elsewhere in the side.

I see what you mean, and if Fleck performs in the league as he did today, we wont have that worry! He was dire. Think its probably the worst ive seen him, and ive always been a fan of his.

4 goals in 122 games for Fleck, he adds nothing defensively, doesn't score goals, very rarely plays an decisive pass. Why is he still here?

He doesn't get far enough forward to make decisive or killer pass, he is probably an opts champion with passing but they are rarely forward. That record is a disgrace I hadn't realised it was that bad.

Is it just me or does 122 games seem too far fetched? Surely not that many

Dont get me wrong i think he has talent and I know a lad who played some youth football with him and he said that we was an amazing talent but he hasn't trained on. I think he needs a fresh start elsewhere and we need to get a box to box type alongside Vincelot who can do the dirty work.

TBH, If we could lets say get rid of Fleck, Finch and Thomas in order to bring in a midfielder like Hessenthaler (rate him highly but know we would have no chance of getting him, but someone in his mould) from Gillingham, Id go for that, even if it did leave us a bit short in defensive midfield cover.

3 were in 2012-13 and one in 2013-14 if that helps to recall

No goals last season in 44 league appearances, 48 overall last season.

Than again a quick google of Hessenthaler shows he has scored just 2 goals in 56 games for the Gills.

Still maintain hes looked good when ive seen him though

He scored one at six fields and 3 in his first season apparently. None last season.

I do see what you're saying.

It's one of those isn't it. In theory, we are better defensively this season (and to an extent, last season too compared to the first S******ds season), but the difference is out the 3 seasons, we have no one to stick the ball in the net.

I don't believe we won by more than 2 goals last season IIRC? Whereas the Robins era we were beating teams by 3+ goals, and the first full season under Pressley too, but with a much poorer defence.
