From a very reliable source I can tell you the player we are trying to sign to replace King is a far bigger star than Lefondre but it will be dependent on whether the guy wants to drop his wages to the offered £10,000 per week

I'll wait until it actually happens before I get excited, but it's nice to have some positive news for a change.

No its not!! and as Thorny says the fact we have kept it under the radar is very good....also have heard that Sisu meet with the new investors and board on Thursday so things are indeed moving forward at a pace.

Its all whether he wants to drop from the wages he was on to what would be guaranteed first team footy.......

Cheers Matty. Do you know whether they have any chance of being completed before Saturday?

Not yet, it will come out soon and all I will say is would be far better than what we have, not a big goal scorer but briiliant provider and top quality player who is on a bosman. It comes from the same source who told me we were two weeks from admin in Feb last year weeks before it all came out so I trust what he hears.

I am hoping for Simon Cox but cannot see it being him as even if he isn't first choice at the Boggies its still Prem football.

Most teams have less players than last season. Leaving signings til the last second will get them cheaper. Players would prefer to sign for less than not at all. Not good for preparation, but at least we can then afford a slightly better player. Maybe this is what AT meant by if we get them good, if not then.....

AFAIK you don't have a reputation for bullshitting Matty, but I can't see what harm would come from posting a name up on here.

How about I name some players and if I get it right you drop me a PM?

John Carew?

The only other out of contract Premiership strikers I can find are Eddie Johnson, Benjani and possibly Simon Cox (not sure if he signed a new contract)

Carew was reportedly on £50k plus at Villa so that would be one hell of a drop in wages. Stoke tried to get him at end of loan spell but couldn't agree wages.

McFadden for me. Heard a whisper, but sounds a bit far fetched. Is without a club though.

Has Jason Roberts signed for anyone yet? I know he was in talks with Ipswich and Fester but not sure if he actually signed. What about Robbie Blake or Brett Ormerod? Not sure of their status and cannot be bothered to google it.

If we offer McFadden £10,000 a week, we deserve another transfer embargo for our own good. Same goes for Cox. As much as I know we'd all love for it to be Carew, there's just no way he'd be affordable. Houllier massively under-rated him at Villa, and he has a fantastic record at some very reputable clubs, but what are the chances that he'd drop to the Championship to fight a relegation battle on less than 20% of his previous pay-packet? I don't think he'd particularly suit the style Thorne is aiming for, either. His big strength is in the air with heavy dependence on wingers and delivery into the box, and that isn't how we're trying to play. He's more than capable with the ball at his feet, but his days of running at defenders are long gone. For all intents and purposes, he could just prove to be a very posh Clive Platt. Nah, I don't mean that...

I have no idea why people don't just mention the player if they know who it is........Perhaps we could make a "guess who" board and perhaps ask questions throughout the day! Come on Nick sort it out..... put it below the "ask Twitter man" thread.

Hate it when people do this. Lets face it, pretty much all the names mentioned are way out of our range but would all be good signing. I think Le Fondre is the best we can hope for.

I think it is Mcfadden this mystery player.

Anyway Matty what would you rate our chance of pulling off this signing?

EDIT : Also any chance of anyone being signed before Saturday's game?
