Meet Coventry City's new Performance Director with a fascinating backstory

Sky Blues reporter Andy Turner sits down with the club's new Performance Director Dr Claire-Marie Roberts to take an in-depth look at her role and delve into her fascinating backstory from Olympic level swimmer and civil engineer to sports psychology

Interesting article into what’s happening behind the scenes at the Sky Blues. Guess we cannot use the same excuse of being tired next season

Not sure I’d open with this if I wanted to endear someone to City fans!

People can knock Doug for some of the things he didn't get right last season but his investment in the infrastructure and recruiting of staff has been exemplary so far

Very interesting read!
Wonder how many Championship clubs have backroom structure such as this. Obviously some will.

It's great being a Sky Blue innit.

In my 70s now and I can honestly say I'm as proud to be a City fan today as I was when I made my way to HR alone on a bus from Canley at the age of 7!

We've come such a long way in the seven years that MR has been at the helm and we're starting to look like a proper 21st century technology embracing football club.

That was a really good read.

It's great to think of us as a 'modern' football club now. Using modern tech and a way of thinking rather than the old school, "Mike Bassett", tried and tested methodology.

The shift in attitude since DK took over must make working within the club far more exciting now. Being able to advance and improve things rather than just frustration from working under such an amateurish set up with SISU.

I work in IT so I love that we're using data and technology in a more constructive way - this is the way especially when attempting to compete with bigger clubs. Brentford and Brighton especially are masters at this in the PL and have often punched above their weight in that league.

We're making big steps, on and off the pitch. Love it.

And to think under our previous owners, we barely even had a scouting department (Pressley's big moan)

Yes I agree. I remember just a few years ago when our players used to get injured during training. It was very weird.

The new pitches and refurbishments/training equipment/use of modern tech and sports psychology will hopefully make us a fitter, stronger and more confident squad next season.

I think we are playing catch up after years of off field mismanagement and under investment.
Thank fuck MR stuck around through the Sisu debacle, and it's great that someone like Doug is listening to him and backing him.

Actually a cracking read, that

Looks like everyone is pulling in the same direction and King is investing, even if at times it doesn't feel like it from the outside looking in. Exciting times!

Agreed. MR created an ethos of "I'll deal with the owners, fans just get behind the players, it's us against the world".

On a Bus alone age 7, how times have changed, today they would call in the Social Services and try and get the parents arrested.

Different time I’m 69 went on my own from the age of 8 or 9 dad worked till 2 or 3 on Saturdays. Got the no 14 inner circle bus to the ground 2 old pence paid at the child gate if I remember correctly it was 1and 3 went to the kids enclosure at the front of the Kop. Got the bus back home from outside the Sky Blue Stand. If you looked like you were alone the adults would make sure you were ok.

Interestingly, there’s an article in the Times today about Derby setting up a ‘Sporting Intelligence Department’, and making two new appointments. Mo Bobat, previously Head of Performance at England Cricket, and Ed Smith, a former England cricketer and selector, who is renowned for using AI in sport. I’m sure our lady will be far better than them!!

Gone are the days when a couple of bottles of brown ale and a tab helped refresh the players at half time.

Just have to look on LinkedIn to see how much more staff the club has now.

Pre-Doug our entire scouting team was 3 or 4 people. Now we have Dean Austin, Jamie Johnson, multiple scouts, even more analysts and the StatsBomb partnership.

Wouldn't be too surprised if the 'team' under SISU in League 2 was Football Manager on a crappy PC.

Did she do her personality report on Stamenic? Doesn't sound like he was necessarily of the right personality for the club's cause.

The 2nd part of Turner's interview on the Cov Tel website today shows just how much in-depth work is going on at CCFC to identify the right transfer targets.

No real harm in people on here throwing random choices around, but it really isn't as simple as just picking a favourite player and sticking a bid in.
