This looks like another Euros competition. Do we really need this - another chance for England to crash and burn?

It's a great chance for rubbish footballing nations to qualify and further devalue the euros.

Not quite sure of the point of it to be honest. It looks like you can qualify for the Euros via this as well if I've understood it correctly.

Great. Usually only have to worry about Coventry getting relegated every season - now I have to worry about England too!

I really don’t get it, so England can lose to Croatia and Spain but still qualify by playing a nation from the lesser ranked countries?

No it isn't. You can qualify through this. But there will be qualifiers separate to the nation's league.
It is confusing though.

Haha. Nothing would surprise me when it comes to the clowns that run football.

You can’t actually qualify for the euros during the nations league. It’s just The highest place teams in each group that haven’t qualified via the euro qualifiers get a chance in a play off.

There are 4 different leagues (top 12 in the rankings go into the top one, etc). Each league has 4 divisions. The winner from each division from top league (the one we’re in) go through to the semis and final next June. The teams in their leagues get relegated & promoted depending on where they finish along with the one that fishes bottom of ours.

The winners of the 4 leagues have play offs in March to determine who gets a place at the Euros. It’s likely though that all 4 will go through so the winner of the bottom league (San Marino, Luxembourg, etc) are probably going to get a place in the tournament.

It’s good as it almost removes friendlies. We will have a couple in October or November as there are only 3 teams in our group so we only need 4 games. It also means the likes of Northern Ireland and Romania can’t “cheat” the system as they rarely played friendlies and went up the rankings because of it.

There is a bad side. We could end up with some awful teams in the worst tournament Uefa have ever overseen due to the stupid way they’ve organised it. It also gets complicated when you qualify through the Nations League and qualifying.

Due to the nature of this new process, the chances of a team like Italy not qualifying will be greatly reduced. What happens if you finish say 8th, don’t qualify from the qualifiers but the 7 above have done?

I’m 50/50 from what I’ve seen. Really looking forward to Croatia and depending on the location the same goes for Spain.

27 years now, bizarrely before UEFA they were part of Oceania. Hell of a trek for home games.

It replaces friendlies which are a waste of time.

I think it’ll be good...gives ‘friendlies’ a new dimension and there’s a chance for Euros qualification. It doesn’t replace the qualifiers, it’s an addition in place of friendlies.

I like it. I think it’ll be good.

I liked your post apart from this bit.

I think it’s Wales who were accused of that. Not us Norn Irish. In any case...I can’t see how it cheats the system....surely it’s harder to win more competitive matches?!

Sorry it may well be actually. The reason why, is if you don’t play a friendly you can end up higher in the rankings. For example when we beat Scotland in 2013 our points total ended up dropping more than it would’ve done if we hadn’t played at all.

Btw I used inverted commas for a reason. It’s a loophole.

England play the system themselves very well when it comes to friendlies; you're unlikely to ever find am England fan who will actually admit it though.

How? In the last 5 years I would say we’ve played a good range of opposition and played more than our fair share from the upper reaches of the rankings.

Surely the worst offenders were Poland. They hardly played any friendlies, just qualifying & tournament games and they were ranked 6th in the world for the World Cup draw although they have now dropped to 7th after drawing and losing 2 friendlies. The Nations League will now ensure they play at least 4 more games.

I think it has the potential to make games a lot more competitive as there is something to actually play for rather than the useless friendlies two games into the season. The issue with it would be down to the clubs and the management of those players for injuries etc.

As much as I hate Rugby, the home nations tournament would be great to see. of course England would win comfortably if just 4 teams unless other teams were invited (Italy, France) but again the timing of such tournament would be difficult.

I used to love internationals but I just don't get excited by them anymore so anything to heighten the importance of these games is welcome in my book.
