Like some fullbacks I could understand it with. Maatsen was insanely kamikaze with his positioning; you’d see him nearly as high as the centre forward sometimes at crazy times. Still a really really good player and he was still very much learning at that stage and at times, it’s a massive asset having someone out wide that high up!

MVE far more conservative than that, and he has enough pace that he can make up the ground usually and was usually good in a 1v1.

Luton signed Ryan giles for around 5 million and Milan is miles clear of giles

Im not sure I buy the whole “caught out of position “ thing - often just a football cliche which is often incorrectly used.

His job was often to get high up the pitch when we have the ball, but fortunately he has the pace to make excellent recovery runs. If the ball gets turned over because someone else has lost possession, it’s not his fault he is high up the pitch and an opponent is now behind him?!

Still think he was / is a better defensive outlet than an attacking one.

Yeah, his main strength is his recovery pace. I think KKH could be a better weapon in attack as he inverts on the attack a lot more than MVE who likes to overlap in a more traditional way. There were times on Saturday was in the right 10 position when we had the ball.

I’ve only seen one preseason game (the St Pauli one) but I felt KKH offered a little more unpredictability.

I hope we don’t live to miss that recovery pace; useful with our high line.

So, given he is young, has pace to burn, gets forward well, is rarely injured, and has a long-throw - why is he only plying his trade in the Championship, with a (suggested) value of 6.5m?

It’s not ‘shit talking’ a player to point out issues that limit their value/ceiling - MVE’s positional awareness isn’t great - he does, however, have the pace to get back and recover, which masks it somewhat. Professional scouts clearly recognise that, which is why we haven’t been inundated with offers at ~6m+ valuation.

MVE has been great for us, and I’ve enjoyed watching him, but he’s not the best right fullback we’ve had in my time watching the club (Big up, Roland Nilsson) and I think KKH will be an adequate replacement.

Love MVE but he definately gets caught out of position often and uses pace to recover.

My opinion, in today’s crazy market rates, 6.5M is poor.

Has this 6.5 mill been plucked up by one of the forum plonkers or is it legitimate

Yes but as I’ve said; he gets caught out of position because he is doing his literal job - pushing high up the pitch when we have possession. Football isn’t played with flat banks of 4 or 5 behind the ball now when you’re in possession unless your Wycombe Wanderers or Premier League era Stoke City.

It happens to all full backs. Yes there’s an element of picking the right moments but I actually think MVE is relatively conservative given his pace.

Im with jamesimus , any fullback gets caught out time to time when asked to play high up the pitch .. the fact he can recover is what makes him so valuable to the team

I’ve enjoyed watching him play. Always perplexed me why, given his attributes, he was never comfortable at wing-back?

That goal against Oxford last season will live long in the memory- was right behind his shot

But also prone to brain farts like in the playoffs against Sunderland.

Has been a great player for us. We are lucky to have signed him. Played nearly the whole of last season when we didn't have proper cover for him. But it seems like he is going to have been the perfect player for us in the future.

I kind of feel like people just say this phrase in regards to all fullbacks they want to shit on. It’s system dependent obviously, but for us he does as he is told and does it well.

If we’re talking about his weaknesses, no one has said defending set-pieces and that’s what I think is one of his weaknesses.

The revisionism of MVE and what he has brought to this team is actually mental.

He faded a bit last season admittedly, but wasn't he the only player to feature in every single game too?

His performance against Man U and Rashford shows you the levels he is capable of.

Can’t disagree with that. He had a poor start to the season as well (as did everyone) but as he’d been pretty consistent up until then, it seemed more telling.

KKH has played a similar number of Championship games and attracts the 'english premium' and was £3.5m. In that context £6m+ looks good, albeit MVE had played in the dutch top flight as well.

Tbf MVE has over 100 top flight appearances under his belt and more than twice the amount of first team appearances than KKH.

Players of MVE’s quality are never going to stick around in the second division forever. We’ve been proactive and secured a good quality replacement early which is the most you can really ask for, besides securing a good fee. The consequences of being a good team who miss out on promotion is that players are going to want to leave to further their careers.

Fully agree! I’m also happy with KKH as his replacement just frustrated it hasn’t resulted in improvements across the rest of the squad (yet).

High quality CB and Winger and it’s been a good window

If true, which I find unlikely, £6.5m is a bit underwhelming. I would think he’s worth at least 20-30% more, and I don’t think that’s with any bias. On the NTT20 podcast they flagged him as the champs best full back, and I’d suggest you’re expecting 8 figures for anyone like that, especially at only 24yo

Yeah, I thought it could be bad but I've heard no news, a worry if MVE goes then we're back to Lati filling in at RB for the forseeable.

Also thought this.

He's solid; difficult to beat and good in the tackle. Add his pace into that, and he's by far and a way our best defensive player.

6.5 isn't enough imo, although that figure could just be "pie in the sky", he's worth more than that.

I don’t believe the fee is £6.5m, he’s got 2 years on his contract and is 24 years old. It’s not a terrible price with the add-on but isn’t good either when you bear in mind what we got for Vik and Hamer with 1 year left in their contracts.

Not to repeat myself - but if it's an initial £6.5m as saddle said, then that's the base of the deal - like when we signed Simms for "£8m" which in reality was £3m with add-ons.

So, as with most transfers, you can frame it in either way - if it was oh we've sold Milan for a fee that could be £10-11m with a 15% sell on I think we'd all be pretty happy.

Also aware this could all be a load of bollocks so who really cares.

Djed Spence went from Boro for 3 times that amount several years ago and has gone on to do fuck all. Yes there's the 'English' tax but even so, I really didn't think 8 figures for MVE was unrealistic.

The upfront obviously means it’s getting spent straight away if true

I’m expecting some big signings now in the next week or two

I'll believe the terms when I see them from a better source than one serial bullshitter and another poster who's admitted he hasn't got any sources.

If it is up front, it means they can afford a bigger fee. We should be getting more.

Gutted to see MVE leave loved having him at the club. First time I seen him look not his usual self in the friendly at the weekend but that might be me just looking into things too much. Wonder if that’s the last time he wears sky blue. KKH is definitely an upgrade I’m just worried about injuries we don’t have the backup to replace and don’t get me started if we have a CB injured
