I might have imagined this Born Slippy but I'm certain King played half time once at HR during a friendly.......

I'm sure there was a time when we came out to 'Love and Pride' by King, although that may have been pre-match rather than walk-out?

If memory serves, didn’t King play a set at HR ? I think it was part of Greg Downs’ testimonial wasn’t it ? Swear I remember watching it from the Main Stand

All news to me! Could well have forgotten or it was missed games.

If a better cover was used I'm sure we could get the crowd to sing before kick off, similar to clubs like Liverpool, Wolves, Sheff Utd, Sheff Wed, Leeds etc...

Totally agree, we should do that. I love Forest's Mull O Kintyre. Spine tingling when at full voice.

I don't recall ever seeing the lads run out to that bloody awful shite song, "Go For It City!" Gotta be the worst football song ever! I cringe whenever I hear that! I always felt it was a rip-off of the Okey Cokey tune. Sing it and think of the Okey Cokey! You'll see what I mean!

Think football team songs died a welcome death after that appalling song by us.

Speaking of which absolutely loved the 'Kelly in the middle song........' and it was amazing to hear at Notts County away.

By the time I was walking away from Wembley a few weeks later after hearing it for the 1,000th time....hated it.

Haha, bloody love that tune, iconic and brings back very fond memories!

It may be crap but it's our crap.

Yes you’re imagining it. That was the music we ran back in to at the end.

In the 04/05 season there was a weird mash of 'The Final Countdown' and 'Satisfaction'.

'Come With Me' was based on a sample of 'Kashmir'. Not sure if they played an instrumental version of Zepplin or Diddy, though!

I’m gonna go one further and say that ‘hot shot Tottenham’ by chas and Dave is the greatest ever football song!

We've had some good pre-run out music which has been better:

Darude - Sandstorm
Fatboy Slim - right here right now

The pre-run out music at St Andrews is good (Sweet Caroline being a personal favourite)

There is a song that's in my head but cannot remember (circa 2009/2010). It's a theme song to a TV show, think the intro had a guy running. Any idea?

Sweet Caroline is played everywhere now, boxing, darts, football matches, it’s well over-used

Thank you to everyone for commenting and sharing your memories, its invaluable to the project.

To answer a few questions (which is fair enough, it's a niche area!) - the reason we're doing this study is because we're football fans who are all interested in the game and what it says about the wider culture we live in. We're not only interested in what the music is/was, but the why - we're keen to see how changes in style, type of music used relate to a club's status, wider music fashions, the wider fashionability of football, how clubs have attempted to commodify the match going experience and the battle between globalism/localism.

A special thanks for sharing the Hibs video too - I hadn't seen that and it really is spine tingling!!

If anyone else has any other songs to share please let me know. If you remember roughly what season a song was played in that's very helpful too!

Once again, thanks for all your help,
Cheers

Rise and fall of band that was King in the Eighties

They performed the Match Of The Day theme apparently.

Why tamper with tradition?

The Sky Blue Song (Eton Boating Song) as played by the Ted Heath Orchestra is perfect, its ours, and gets the hairs on the back of the neck standing up when you hear it.

Interesting article, cheers. Brian Roberts testimonial.

“On September 10 1984 King provided the pre-match entertainment at a testimonial for Coventry City’s then skipper and stalwart Brian Roberts. The band played a 45-minute set precariously perched on the back of a lorry parked in the centre circle at Highfield Road. The set included a reworking of the Match of the Day theme tune.”
