Hey guys,

I hope this is okay to post here – if not, moderators please move or delete as appropriate.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris

Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine

articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and

replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have

run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that Coventry City have run out to, for as

many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in

the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons

Coventry City ran out to this. Any help you can give us to

piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would

be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs

being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song

that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the

tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any

questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the

project.

Thanks for your time guys,

Joe Headland

First half:
ELO - Mr Blue Sky
A shit cover of the Eton Boating song with the CCFC lyrics

Second half:
The shit cover of the Eton Boating song with the CCFC lyrics

If a better cover was used I'm sure we could get the crowd to sing before kick off, similar to clubs like Liverpool, Wolves, Sheff Utd, Sheff Wed, Leeds etc...

We've had some good pre-run out music which has been better:

Darude - Sandstorm
Fatboy Slim - right here right now

The pre-run out music at St Andrews is good (Sweet Caroline being a personal favourite)

There is a song that's in my head but cannot remember (circa 2009/2010). It's a theme song to a TV show, think the intro had a guy running. Any idea?

Was it the theme of The Contender? The one they did the accompanying video to?

The clubs official twitter @Coventry_city is very well run and monitored, They may be able to put you in touch with someone at the club who could help.
I seem to remember early 90s we ran out to Go for it City and I'm sure the first few season at the Ricoh we came out to a sped up version of the sky blue song.

We definitely came out to the final countdown for a short period in the early 2000s. Always thought it should be ghost town.

Music we HAVE to run out to?

Is this like the music that has resulted in the most wins.

I would send a pvt msg to Philosorapter... I'm sure he will knock out a graph showing this... don't know where you will get 10,000 words out of it, mind!

Slightly off topic so I apologise but always disappointed we've never adopted 'We'll Live and Die in These Towns' by the The Enemy, in a similarish way to how Hibs have with Sunshine on Leith

I'd like to see us dance out to the theme music from 'Zorba the Greek'. That would really intimidate the opposition.

That was written and recorded by a guy called Alan Randle, a George Formby impersonator, from Nuneaton.

I've still got the 7" copy of that somewhere. The B side was 'I love football' and listed all the clubs in the 4 leagues at the time. I was only young and didn't buy it for myself - not sure if Morrissey would let me join his band if I told him it was my first single.

If you have never watched it, watch the Hibs fans singing Sunshine On Leith after they beat Rangers to win the Scottish Cup. It's fantastic. When I got my son to watch it he said "that's why people go to football'

Footballers haven't run out for over three decades. It has long been a slow procession accompanied by the officials.

I remember him changing it from Me Blue Sky as it wasn't intimidating enough or something but he must not be bothered now.
