As I said last week SP talking up Burge's prospects was paving the way for Murphy's departure.

Still think we'll sign a more experienced goalie on a free to be first choice with Burge as backup.

"When I spoke to him at the end of the season we both put our cards on the table and were very transparent about where we were"

And theres the problem !. He said in Jan he wanted to stay. We should have offered him a contract so he could have stood by that statement. To let it run down is our own doing !

Tbh I still think Murphy won't leave us due to him seeing that he won't get any time on the pitch with the other goalkeeper who is there who's name escapes me,there's my optimism but here's hoping, really hoping he stays he has been brill all season and I hope we offer him a new contract before it's too late !!! #PUSB !!! P.s that was an add on to the previous post I posted !! Lol !!

That may be, but it's clearly policy under Fisher. You can see the argument from a "let's not have loads of shit players on long contracts like we always used to" point of view, but it's a very risky strategy and you lose a lot in compensation. It's hard to make a judgement call without knowing the budget and the figures offered/wanted.

there is "Long contracts" and "no contract". Offering Murphy an 18 month contract in Jan would have tested his "i want to stay" comments.

I agree, however 18 month-2 year contracts for older players seems to be the rule and maybe Murph wanted more security? You just don't know.

Also, I don't agree with the strategy, but it's the only reason I can think of. Why else would you willingly lose out on so much in transfer fees?

Nope. Kings agent was whoring him round like there was no tomorrow once he had verbally agreed the deal with us. Gunnarson was always off to Cardiff (can't think why) and anyone whose dumb enough to believe that Westwood was signing when a £30,000 a week payday was in the offing if he ran his contract down really is dumb.

I might be wrong but didn't Westwood turn down a new contract? Honestly can't remember.

But if murphy was on £8k per week as the mail suggested last summer the club are only going to offer him a 1/3rd so he's never going to accept that in Jan anyway. We could have offered him a 3 year contract worth £500 per week and the club would appease fans by saying "well we did offer him a contract"

Footballs different, they speak to the player, he says yeah I'd like to stay but you need to speak to my agent, then the agent says no we want to keep our options open. Add to that that agents can start to talk to other clubs as soon as they're in the last 6 months of the contract, Murphy's agent would have had his feelers out in Jan.

Ranson and Boothroyd said he had, Westwood protested otherwise.

There was a trend at that time for a number of players to claim promised offers never actually happened, wasn't just Westwood.

Lots of them. Can also include the likes of Morrison and McKenzie. McKenzie was particularly vocal about how he was promised a longer term contract, then when it came to the actual offer the goalposts kept moving to a month by month.

Subsequent events don't necessarily suggest the players were the ones making it up, do they...

You don't offer contracts in January when you don't know which Division you'll be playing in or what your budget might be.

It's not 'Rocket Science', Championship clubs will be paying a lot more than we can afford.

Kieran Westwoods move to Sunderland may have made him rich but it hasn't enhanced either his domestic or international career!

18 League appearances in 3 years on a contract allegedly worth between £4:5 & £5 million, happy days.

His career's been a lot more enhanced than if he'd plummeted down the leagues with us...

"Coventry City boss Steven Pressley admits that it’s looking increasingly likely that Joe Murphy will switch to another club this summer.

The Sky Blues are unable to compete with Championship clubs in terms of wages and with the 32-year-old having opened talks with Huddersfield, hopes of convincing him to agree a new deal at City are fading."

Exactly the reality, we have to move on.

Onwards and upwards, just for a change!

Our budget is **** all this year, with costs having been cut to the bone. How was it going to change much in a negative direction between January and next season with regard to potential division we were playing in? It could only have increased with promotion (so we could have offered him one) and it was not going to decrease greatly for next season had we been relegated or remained in L1 (crowds would have been similar, and SISU are plugging the shortfall, with their standard business practice accounting). They only didn't offer a contract because they want to cut costs - end of!

Kuszack !!!!!!!! Yeah that will happen won't it, we let Murphy go cause we can't afford his wages so I'm sure we'll be able cover Kuszack. Turnbull former Chelsea reserve again will want to much, a slight chance if he just wants first team football but in reality he'll have better options.

Just so I know when is the upwards part happening, be honest RFC how many signings do you reckon we will make before the start of the season not loans full time signings.

And out of those signings how many do think would be considered a forward step

@ Torchy..................Take note of the dates in conjunction with this Westwood statement........."Six months ago I would have signed a new deal, 12 months ago I was asking for a new deal, and the year before that they promised me a new deal but nothing ever materialised and I don't know why," he told the Daily Mail.
