Moving Cities (1 Viewer)

So it looks like I’ll be moving out of Cov. Just accepted a job in Southampton. This will be the first time I’ve really done a proper city move since uni.

Anyone got any advice? Experiences?

Weird how as soon as I realised I’m leaving my love for Cov shot up like a rocket.

Yeah, good luck, Shmmeee!

Hope it signals a change in your fortunes. :)

It’s a dream job, so I hope so.

Just a bit nervous, my mates are still the ones I made at school. I’m a homebody really, but for what I want to do I need to move sadly.

I reckon it would be awkward if I moved away, it depends on the kind of place you are moving to.

You don't want to look like the new desperate bloke "Do you want to go to the pub tonight?" when everybody has stuff to do themselves.

Do you do anything to bed in? Or just socialise with workmates? I feel weird making friends in my 30s...

You tend to socialise more with work colleagues at first, especially if they know you're new to town. It's also a good idea to try and reignite a hobby or look at doing something new and getting yourself out there and speaking to people. It's a difficult process but also good for character building, IMO. I moved to Sicily by mysef at 27 with poor Italian and managed to get by, I'm sure you'll have no problem!

I've made friends down the gym just from wearing a Cov shirt. Get a lot of respect off a lot of them for supporting a 'proper' team. ;)

Lived in Southampton for a few years. It's a fairly decent place. People are friendly enough. Obviously like anywhere you have the rough parts, but in the main it's ok.
Any questions on certain areas just give me a shout mate.

Firstly, congrats on the job!

Secondly, the move'll be good too. It's an opportunity for you and even if you decide after a bit it's not for you, it'll make you appreciate Cov all the more eh? But do give it some time even if it's not working out. I reckon I struggle to settle places but, having moved around a couple of times, I always have in the end. Am not denying sometimes it can be hard, but in the end things turn round.

As it happens Mrs. Wisdom moved to the area for her job and, as it's where I work, I've been able to observe some things not to do as well ;)

So firstly, accept any invites to go out early on. Mrs. Wisdom didn't and that tagged her as someone who didn't want to go out, so people stopped asking. Turned out she just didn't want to trouble anybody! Go out early and you'll get the invites as you'll be seen as the sort who wants to. If it's a workplace that doesn't really do socialising, then there's no reason why after a few weeks you can't ask them to go out, to show you the area. What's the worst that happens then?

Might be worth thinking about what you enjoy doing, and joining a club of some kind, whatever. The online world allows you to check out groups too, such as on here! We are what we do | Meetup

It's also a chance to go somewhere without baggage. Nobody'll have an idea of you formed by years of knowing you, so a chance to show yourself how you want to show yourself.

And you're moving there for a positive reason, so that's the right thing.

It's also a chance to see new places, do new things. People who live places take for granted what's on their doorstep so see what events and tourist things are around you that you'd like to do. That gives you something to talk to people about if nothing else, shows you're a well-rounded (well... kind of!) human being.

I am sure he will get on with their council just fine and bring it all back ;)

On a serious note, good advice. I'd probably be the same if I moved as Mrs Wisdom, not wanting to get in the way etc.

Hobbies will be a good one, even dare I say it some sort of fitness classes. Always decent.

Some great advice there. Thanks man.

From my experience pretty similar cities but with Southampton having the edge in terms of location. I relate to your concerns. Went through similar at the same age. My advice, be yourself, don't try too hard and a new social network will come naturally. All the best

Just one thing I would like to add to it. Don't buy a house when you first move. Take a short term rental even if you plan to rent for a bit. Get a feel for the area. And like with anywhere you don't know visit at different times of the day.

Congrats and enjoy. Treat it like an adventure. Lost count of moves I have made. And each one has ended up well.

The police and authorities are going to catch up with you one day though, Astute, mark my words.

Southampton a similar city to Cov. You'll miss the place despite its downfalls.
