Bristol City bid £9 million for Gayle, Sheffield Weds bid £10 million for McCormack. Both owned by wealthy individuals but still this is silly money. How could we compete IF we ever got promoted ?

Unless we get a billionaire owner willing to throw in substantial cash, no we will be a lower midtable/relegation candidate club in the championship.

Depends on what you mean by compete? Compete in the high end of the transfer market? Absolutely not. But that doesn't automatically mean that we can't compete in the league. I'm not suggesting that we can gain automatic promotion, far from it. But we have a canny manager who knows how to get value for money in the transfer market, how to get the best out of players and how to shape a team. We could be comfortable mid table and maybe compete with the teams pushing for playoff positions.

Let's get out of this league first and then worry about the next one

sadly those transfer fees also show why slowly but surely the Championship is following the Premiership and loading up with foreign imports.

How long can this go on? Do you reckon in 10 years we'll be having this conversation in L2 about L1? There's only so many rich owners out there.

Maybe the FA should start a "sustainable" league with all teams having to pay wages out of ticket revenue or something. Or just syphon off the billionaire's playthings into their own league.

All we can do is get there, be more attractive and hope someone wants to support a football club financially, just for the street cred.
Wallowing in the depths of L1 who would want us ?

You do wonder given Bournemouth made £15m losses just trying to get out of league one.

I suppose the sustainable league model is what the FFP rules in leagues one and two are aiming to achieve.

There is more than one way to skin the proverbial cat, but you need a bit of luck... our competitor pays 10 mil and he flops, we pay 500k for an untried and he smashes it. That's where a good scouting system pays off.

That's what FFP tries to do. Doesn't work when you've got a separate league where clubs are gifted cash from a TV company.
