You hear a lot of 'play as a 6' or 'play as an 8'

Why not use the position names!

Especially as in modern football players carry their squad number through a season and even choose their own number based on any number of spurious reasons. Often in games neither side has a ‘6’ or ‘8’ or whatever on the pitch

It's one of those things that can divide opinion, the language in the stadiums (in general) is better than it was back in the 70's
And I understand that parents with young kids wont want to hear it, but when passions are high its going to happen.

What I find rediculous is when tv commentators find the need to apologise every time the microphone picks up swearing from the crowd, its as if they want to completely sanitise every aspect of life and remove the passion from the game.

I can understand it if a player swears in an interview to camera at the final whistle, but by repeatedly apologising they're actually bringing attention to it.

you realise they're only doing this under instruction to try and avoid things like ofcom complaints right?

I genuinely thought you meant a commentator had growled "Hendrie is a c***" for a second there.

Brand of football.
'For Club & Country' quotes associated with pictures of soldiers .
'Stay safe lads' to groups of lads dressed in SI black outside some dodgy pub .

'Get his shot away.'
What's wrong with 'shoot' ?

Offense? No it's attack or defence.

'Used his strength'? No, he pushed.

Off season? No, it's close season
